Winter Haven, Fla. – Highlighted by a pair of stellar pitching performances, the University of Bridgeport's softball team posted a pair of wins over Polk State College on Sunday. The doubleheader sweep improves the Purple Knights' record to 2-2 this season.
Game One – UB 4, Polk State 3
It was a masterful effort from senior pitcher Kaite Burawski that told the story in the opener. The left-hander recorded a remarkable 17 strikeouts while allowing just three hits across seven innings.
At one point, Burawski had tallied an impressive 10 consecutive punch outs. Burawski entered the day with 599 career strikeouts.
The Purple Knights' offense was largely supplied by the duo of Angela Oros and Meg McFarland.
Oros finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs while McFarland hammered an RBI double in the seventh. Oros put UB on the board with a two-run home run in the sixth.
Sydnee Perreault joined Oros with two hits in the game.
Game Two – UB 9, Polk State 2
The Purple Knights' offense erupted for 12 hits in the second contest en route to their highest run total thus far.
UB set the tone right away with a four-run first inning. McFarland and Oros struck again with RBI knocks while Isabella Benjamin launched a two-run home run.
Oros' sensational afternoon continued throughout Game Two as she homered in the third and registered an RBI single in the seventh.
In total, Oros put together a 5-for-8 day at the plate with six RBIs, four runs scored and two home runs.
Making the most of the run support, Vise Zarate once again pitched well for Bridgeport. The sophomore earned the win after allowing just one earned run across 4.2 innings. She is now 1-1 this season with a 1.97 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched.
