Georgian Court Serves Up 3-0 Loss to Wilmington Volleyball

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division contest at Georgian Court on Saturday, 3-0, inside the Wellness Center.

Set scores for the Lions were 25-20, 25-22, and 25-17.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the opening set on a kill from Alex Serna, but then the Lions answered with a 10-2 run to take over the set and lead, 16-12. Another 4-0 spurt gave the Lions a 22-15 lead before the Wildcats tried to rally with a 5-2 run, saving two set points with a kill from Cailyn Smiley and a Lions error. But the Lions answered with a block, taking a 1-0 lead, 25-20.

A 10-5 run in the middle of set two turned an 11-9 deficit into an 18-16 lead for the Wildcats, capped by an ace from Elly Collins. But the Lions answered right back with a 4-0 run of their own, regaining a 20-18 lead. The teams traded points back and forth with the Wildcats getting to within 22-21. The Wildcats had a service error and then the Lions put away an ace to gain set point, 24-21. A Smiley attack error eventually gave the Lions the second game, 25-22.

An Alex Serna Kill tied the third game, 11-11, but then a Georgian Court 8-1 run put the third game, and the match, away for the Lions. The Wildcats scored back-to-back points with kills from Karalyn Osbourne and Cailyn Smiley to bring the Wildcats to within 23-17, but the Lions answered with a kill and an ace to win the match, 25-17.

The Wildcats hit .119 as a team, committing 18 errors. The Lions also put away seven aces in combination with the Wildcats committing nine errors in the service game.

Alex Serna hit .353 for the Wildcats, finishing with eight kills with only two errors. Cailyn Smiley also had eight kills to lead the offense. Sydney Barrett and Karalyn Osbourne had four kills each. Elly Collins had 15 digs while Katie Bushong dished out 23 assists.

The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday night when they step outside the CACC and welcome West Chester to the WU Athletics Complex. The first serve against the Rams is set for 7:00 p.m.
