Jones, Trador Earn Weekly CACC Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 25, 2013) – Torey Jones (Providence, R.I.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the reporting period ending February 24, 2013. Nyack's Tori Trador was named as the CACC Rookie of the Week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Torey Jones (Sr., G, Providence, R.I.) Caldwell – Major: Psychology
Jones led the Cougars to two victories last week, averaging 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
Jones started the week with 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks in a 60-46 victory at Bloomfield College on Tuesday. The win was Caldwell's first at Bloomfield since the 2007-08 season, ending a string of six losses at the Bloomfield Gymnasium. On Saturday, Jones led the Cougars to a 73-60 triumph at Concordia College with 25 points while shooting 4-of-7 from three-point range. The victory was Caldwell's 13th in a row and clinched first place in the CACC North Division. For the week, she shot 59.2 percent (16-of-27) from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tori Trador (Fr., G, Seminal, Fla.) Nyack – Major: Nursing
Trador, who missed eight weeks due to injury, returned to play with a bang last week, scoring a career-high 13 points against Felician on 4-for-10 shooting from behind the arc. The freshman nursing student again reached double-digits on 3-for-8 shooting from distance against Chestnut Hill. For the week, Trador tallied eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block and averaged just over 20 minutes a game.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Kelly Brady (Sr., F, Ocean City, N.J.) Holy Family - Major: Special/Elementary Education
Recorded two double-doubles in the Tiger's victories over Chestnut Hill (61-55) and Goldey-Beacom (69-58) this past week. She scored 12 points against the Griffins on Tuesday, connecting on 60% of her shots from the floor. The senior went 1-for-1 from behind the arc on Saturday as she scored 11 points and pulled in 11 rebounds for the Tigers. For the week, Kelly averaged 11.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while adding two assists, five steals and a block to her stat line.
Irene Hudson (Sr., F, Syracuse, N.Y.) Goldey-Beacom – Major: Business Administration
Hudson led the Lightning to a split of their last two regular season games, Hudson averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55.0 per cent from the field. She also contributed eight assists with two blocks and one steal. Hudson tallied her third 20-point performance of the season in win over Philadelphia University after making seven of nine shots from the floor and 6 of 7 free throws. In the Lightning's loss against No. 6 Holy Family on Saturday afternoon, the Lightning co-captain tallied 14 points, including a six-for-eight performance from the free throw line, while grabbing eight rebounds with two blocked shots
Krystina Agard (Sr., G, Queens, N.Y.) Concordia - Major: Psychology
Agard led the Clippers to a 65-61 victory over Felician with 22 points while adding eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in her 39 minutes of action on Tuesday. The Queens. N.Y. native also added 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal in a 73-60 loss to Caldwell on Saturday.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - The Lady Deacons went 1-1 for the week, picking up a victory over CACC South Division rival Wilmington University in their regular season finale Thursday night. Junior shooting guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.) led Bloomfield with 15 points off the bench, going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc in the victory. Rookie forward Iman Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) totaled 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench in a solid frontcourt effort, while rookie guard Nahja Carter (Neptune, N.J.) notched 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win. Bloomfield has earned the fourth seed in next week's CACC Tournament, and will travel to take on South Division top seed Holy Family University in the Tournament Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
CALDWELL - The Cougars clinched first place in the CACC North Division with victories at Bloomfield and Concordia last week. Senior guard Torey Jones led Caldwell in both wins, starting the week with a 21-point, eight-rebound performance in a 60-46 triumph at Bloomfield on Tuesday. Sophomore forward Emily Caswell added 18 points and five steals. In Saturday's 73-60 win at Concordia, Jones poured in 25 points and made four threes, as the Cougars won their 13th consecutive game. This is the first time since the conference went to divisions in 2007-08 that the Cougars have finished in first place alone, having tied for first with Bloomfield in 2010-11. As the top seed in the North, Caldwell will host Philadelphia, seeded fourth in the South, in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament on Saturday.
CHESTNUT HILL - The Griffins highlighted a 1-2 week with their fourth straight CACC home win on Thursday, February 21, when they defeated Nyack College 76-61. The Griffins out rebounded the Warriors 55-33 to build a 44-29 halftime advantage and a 63-36 lead just eight minutes into the second half (12:04). Senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) led the Griffins with her third double-double in four games; 14 points and 11 rebounds. The end of the week featured Senior Day, where senior guard Latoya Laing (Snellville, Ga.) led the Griffins a 76-61 loss to the University of the Sciences on Saturday, February 23, with 13 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
CONCORDIA – Concordia ended the season with a 65-61 victory over Felician on Tuesday and a 73-60 loss against Caldwell on Saturday. The Clippers won 7 of their last 11 CACC games but missed the playoffs by one game. In Concordia's win on Tuesday, senior Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) led the Clippers with 22 points while adding eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in 39 minutes of action. Senior Sade Jones (Patterson, N.J.) added 18 points, six rebounds and two steals while junior Victoria Jones (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, three steals and a block. Concordia shot 21-of-30 (70.0%) from the foul line as both teams recorded 49 rebounds in the game. The Clippers finished the season 9-18 (8-11 CACC) and recorded their most overall wins since the 2004-05 season.
DOMINICAN – The Lady Chargers went 1-0 in action last week to finish the regular season with an overall record of 17-9 and a CACC record of 14-5. The team finished second in the CACC North Division and will host a CACC Tournament Quarter-Final game on Saturday, March 2nd.
FELICIAN – Despite a season-ending home victory over Nyack, the Golden Falcons failed, by a one-game margin, to qualify for the CACC Tournament following back-to-back quarterfinal appearances. They also saw a school-record streak of three consecutive winning seasons come to an end. Shakeema Green, Felician's only senior, recorded 13 points, five rebounds, and six steals in Saturday's Senior Day win.
GOLDEY-BEACOM - After splitting a pair of CACC games to end the regular season, the Lightning will enter the CACC quarterfinals on Saturday as the second seed in the South Division. Now 19-9 overall, the Lightning finished the regular season with a 16-3 CACC mark to set a school record for conference victories in a single season. The Lightning defeated Philadelphia University on Tuesday night before dropping a 69-58 decision against No. 6 Holy Family on Saturday afternoon, snapping their school-record nine-game win streak. Each of the Lightning's last two defeats have come against the Tigers. Senior forward Irene Hudson posted a pair of double-digit scoring performances last week, including a 20-point effort against Philadelphia University on Tuesday night. The Lightning's leading scorer with a 12.8 average, she has scored at least 10 points in each of her last six contests. Meanwhile, senior guard Jacinda Jones set the GBC single-season three-point field goals record on Tuesday night when she connected on three of seven attempts from beyond the arc; she now has 57 made three-point field goals this season. Senior guard Devonne Richardson, who continues to lead the Lightning in rebounding, also broke her own single-season assist record on Saturday against Holy Family and will enter the CACC Tournament with 121 assists in 26 games. The Lightning, who will be playing the 10th CACC Tournament game in the program's history on Saturday, will host Post University in a quarterfinal game at the Jones Center. Led by a "triple double" from Richardson, the Lightning claimed the regular season meeting by a 68-45 margin on Jan. 26 at the Post Center.
GEORGIAN COURT – The Lions concluded its 2012-13 season Tuesday with a 68-54 loss to USciences. GCU recorded eight victories this season in the program's best year since the 2009-10 season. Georgian Court honored seniors Shauenia McPhearson, Ebony Sellers, and Christina White prior to Tuesday's game.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family (24-2, 18-1 CACC) increased its winning streak to 12 games after picking up another pair of conference victories this past week. The Tigers defeated Chestnut Hill (61-55) on Tuesday and capped the week with a victory at Goldey-Beacom (69-58). With the victory over the Lightning, the Tigers clinched the top-seed in the South Division as well as the team's sixth straight South Division regular season title and 13th consecutive overall. Holy Family also finished the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record at home. Senior Kelly Brady led the Tigers with a pair of double-doubles in the two wins. Holy Family, ranked sixth in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, found itself ranked fifth in the first installment of the East Region rankings.
PHILADELPHIA – The Rams (13-12, 9-9 CACC) visited Delaware twice last week and came away with a 1-1 record. Philadelphia was defeated by Goldey-Beacom on Feb. 19, 68-57. Forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, Pa.) recorded 12 points and 13 rebounds against the Lightning. On Feb 23, guard Taylor Peltzer (Holland, Pa.) scored a career-high 26 points as the Rams pulled away for an 86-68 win. Forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) posted her 14th double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Arnao is fifth in Divsion II in rebounding (12.3 per game). The Rams wrap-up the regular season on Feb 26 against Chestnut Hill. Philadelphia opens the CACC Tournament on March 2 at Caldwell.
USciences - The Devils recorded a 3-0 week registering road wins against Georgian Court, Post and Chestnut Hill to close out the regular season on a five game winning streak. Brianne Traub (Wayne, N.J.) scored in double figures in all three contests and continues to lead the CACC in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game. Becca Ruggear (Collingdale, Pa.) recorded her eighth and ninth double-doubles on the season against Georgian Court and Chestnut Hill. Ruggear also scored her 800th career point on Saturday vs. Chestnut Hill, moving into 19th place on the Devils all-time list and with six blocked shots in the three games last week, moves up four places to eighth on the Devils all-time blocked shot list with 67 for her career. Traub also moved into 15th place on the Devils all-time scoring list, scoring 49 points this week to give her 963 in just 55 career games. Jessica Sylvester (Trevose, Pa.) made 11 three-point field goals to move into fifth place on the Devils all-time list with 111 for her career. In the most recent NCAA statistical rankings, Traub is ranked 22nd nationally in scoring while Sylvester in 82nd in three-point field goals made per game. Elsebeth Birman (Silver Spring, Md.) is 86th in assists…As a team the Devils are 48th nationally in blocked shots/game (4.2); 58th in assists (14.9), 44th in three point FG% defense (27.5%); 64th in assist/turnover ratio (0.87); 70th in steals (10.2) and 76th in FG% defense (36.7%)
WILMINGTON – Senior Danielle Thomas ended her career as a Wildcat by scoring a game high 26 points against Philadelphia, hitting seven three-pointers to tie the programs second best mark in a single game. She shot 9-for-15 against the Rams overall. The Wildcats went 0-2 for the week, losing to Bloomfield 76-49, and again to Philadelphia 86-68. The Wildcats came out hot against the Rams, shooting 43.2 percent from the floor in the first half, leading to as large as a 16 point lead with 10:03 to play in the opening half. The Rams eventually tied the game before the halftime break. Freshman Tenicia Spence led the Wildcats against Bloomfield, scoring 23 points, making it the 12th game this year in which she tallied at least 20 points.
