Richardson, Wilson Earn CACC Weekly Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (December 10, 2012) – Goldey-Beacom's Devonne Richardson (Baltimore, Md.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Player of the Week for the week ending December 9, 2012. Bloomfield's Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) was selected as the CACC Rookie of the Week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Devonne Richardson (Sr., G, Baltimore, Md.) Goldey-Beacom – Major: Psychology
Devonne led the Lightning to back-to-back CACC victories last week, extending Goldey-Beacom's win streak to three straight games. The Baltimore native posted a pair of double-double efforts in victories over Georgian Court (66-60) and Caldwell (55-53).
Richardson moved into second place on Lightning's all-time rebounding list after posting a14-rebound performance against Georgian Court last Tuesday. The senior psychology major completed her week strong, scoring the game-winning field goal against Caldwell with 5.8 seconds remaining. Devonne also recorded a season-high, 16 rebounds, against Cougars on Saturday and has posted ten or more rebounds in five consecutive games. The senior guard scored 18 points in the Deacon's six point victory on Tuesday and added 15 points to the winning effort on Saturday. She also shared the wealth in the pair of victories and dished out eight assists in the two games.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Ariel Wilson (Fr., G, Chesapeake, Va.) Bloomfield – Major: Biology
Wilson scored a career-high 24 points and totaled nine rebounds, five assists and seven steals in a triple-overtime victory over Georgian Court University. The freshman guard averaged 11.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.7 steals per game over the 2-1 week for the Lady Deacons while averaging 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals against CACC opponents.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Jessica Webber, Post (Jr., G, Naugatuck, Conn.) – Major: Legal Studies
Webber led Post with 14.3 points per game in three wins for the Eagles last week. She shot 52.6 percent from distance and 48.1 percent from the field overall. The Naugatuck native poured in a game-high 23 points as Post defeated Molloy 73-72 on the road on Thursday. In the victory, Webber connected on five of her 10 triples against the Lions and shot 7-for-9 at the foul line. She rounded out the week with 12 points and 3-for-6 shooting from three-point range in a 69-61 win at Chestnut Hill on Saturday.
Torey Jones, Caldwell (Sr., G, Providence, R.I.) – Major: Psychology
Jones averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds over two games last week. The senior psychology major recorded 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 70-62 loss at Post on Tuesday. Torey also contributed 18 points and eight boards at Goldey-Beacom in a 55-53 loss on Saturday.
Tenicia Spence, Wilmington (Fr., G, Baltimore, Md.) – Major: Criminal Justice
Averaged 16.7 points while leading the Wildcats to a 2-1 week. The freshman guard led the Wildcats in scoring in each game last week. Spence first helped her team to its first win of the season against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, scoring 14 points. Two days later, she again led the team with 14 points against Washington Adventist in a 61-52 victory. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the win. On Saturday Tenicia tallied 22 points, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season in a 77-53 loss at Felician.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - The Lady Deacons went 2-1 this week, picking up a non-conference victory over Elizabeth City State University and a triple-overtime victory over conference rival Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon. Rookie guard Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) notched a career-high 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and seven steals in the win, nearly reaching her first career triple-double in the victory. Fellow rookie Nahja Carter (Neptune, N.J.) notched her first career double-double in the win, totaling ten points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight steals, while seniors Dre'Shonda Williams (Piscataway, N.J.) and Shaniqua Bacote (Paterson, N.J.) each totaled 11 points in the win. Williams was Bloomfield's leading scorer in the victory over Elizabeth City, totaled a season-high 15 points off the bench to key the 54-50 victory.
CALDWELL - The Cougars lost a pair of CACC games on the road last week, falling to Post, 70-62 on Tuesday before being edged by Goldey-Beacom, 55-53 on Saturday. Senior guard Torey Jones led Caldwell in both games with 21 points at Post and 18 points against the Lightning. Over the last five games, Jones is averaging 23.6 points per contest. This week the Cougars will play host to Queens College on Wednesday before returning to conference play on Saturday with a home game against Felician.
CHESTNUT HILL – A late first-half Wilmington University run appeared to put Chestnut Hill College away early, but with a team effort, the Griffins clawed back into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, only to fall a point shy at the final buzzer, 61-60. Senior guard Latoya Laing (Snellville, Ga.) and senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) each offered double-double efforts in the defeat. Laing recorded the first of her career in a team-leading 17-point, 12-rebound, five-assist feat. Later in the week, Post University stayed a step ahead of Chestnut Hill College for the duration of a 69-61 CACC win. The Griffins narrowed the advantage to three points, 60-57, heading to the final three minutes (3:20), but the Eagles added the finishing touches from the free throw line, 69-61. Alexander headlined the home effort with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a block and five of the Griffins' 21 steals.
CONCORDIA – Concordia finished the week with a 1-2 record as the Clippers fell to Holy Family and NYIT while grabbing a 71-28 victory over Nyack. In the win, senior Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) led Concordia with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field while adding six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Alyssa Dawson (Westwood, N.J.) chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists while senior Sade Jones (Patterson, N.J.) came off the bench to score nine points. The Clippers recorded a season-best 54 rebounds as they held Nyack to 13.8% (9-of-65) shooting from the field. The 43 point victory for Concordia is the largest margin of victory since a 92-44 win over Mt. St. Vincent in the 1997-98 season which was also the last time the Clippers defeated an opponent by more than 40 points. The last time Concordia held an opponent to under 30 points and won the game was during the 2000-01 season when the Clippers defeated SUNY Purchase, 42-22. For the upcoming week Concordia will travel to Adelphi for a non-conference game.
DOMINICAN – The women's basketball team defeated the University of the Sciences in their only game of the week to now stand at 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Four Lady Chargers scored in double figures in the victory, led by junior forward KC Jentzen who had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
FELICIAN -In winning back-to-back games last week for the first time this season, Felician held its two opponents to combined 25.2 percent shooting from the floor (32-127), including a 21.9 percent rate (7-32) from three-point range. The Golden Falcons also forced 45 turnovers in the pair of victories. Junior forward Trina Plummer outscored the opposition by herself in Saturday's first half, netting 19 opening-period points as Felician opened a 36-12 lead in an eventual 77-53 triumph over Wilmington.
GOLDEY-BEACOM - After defeating Georgian Court and Caldwell last week, the Lightning improved to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the CACC. The victories extended Goldey-Beacom's win streak to three consecutive games, marking their second three-game win streak of the season. Senior guard Devonne Richardson led the Lightning to their two victories last week, averaging 16.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per game. In addition, she moved into second place on the Lightning's all-time rebounding list and needs 41 rebounds to become the second player in school history with 1,000 career rebounds. She posted a pair of double-double efforts last week, including a season-high 16 rebounds against Caldwell in addition to the game-winning field goal in the 55-53 victory over the Cougars. Meanwhile, the Lightning set season highs by making 22 free throws in 34 attempts against Georgian Court on Tuesday night. Of the Lightning's six wins this season, five of them have been decided by seven points or less. The Lightning will play two road games this week, visiting Wilmington on Monday night before a Wednesday non-conference clash at Molloy.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family (8-1, 5-0 CACC), ranked 13th in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, extended its winning streak to eight games with a pair of conference victories last week. The Tigers defeated Philadelphia, 56-48, on Tuesday and capped the week with a 77-49 victory vs. Concordia on Saturday. Senior Kelly Brady led Holy Family with her fourth double-double of the season vs. the Rams as she finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Against the Clippers, senior Erin Mann came away with her fourth double-double of the season after scoring a game-high 29 points, just two shy of her career-high, and recording a game-best 11 rebounds.
PHILADELPHIA – The Rams are 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play after going 1-1 against CACC competition last week. Philadelphia started the week with a 56-48 loss to Holy Family on Tuesday. Senior guard Taylor Peltzer paced Philadelphia with 15 points, nine rebounds. Freshman forward Tori Arnao had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. On Saturday, Philadelphia recovered and knocked off Nyack 78-56. Peltzer led the way with 17 points for the Rams--who used a 21-5 run to break a 26-all tie. Sophomore guard Monica Schacker and Blye scored 16 points each. This week, the Rams visit Georgian Court for a CACC match-up on Thursday and welcome non-conference opponent East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
POST - After a 3-0 week and a pair of conference victories, Post has notched a nine-game conference winning streak. Last week the Eagles earned wins over Caldwell (70-62), at Molloy (73-72) and at Chestnut Hill (69-61). Against the Cougars, Post erased a seven-point halftime deficit and outscored its opponent 42-27 in the second half to earn the win at home. Monique Chance tallied her second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 14 rebound to lead all players. Fernanda Mansilla was one assist shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine helpers. At Molloy on Thursday, Chance hit the game-winning jumper in the lane with 3.1 seconds to go to lift the Eagles over the Lions. Junior Jessica Webber poured in a career-high 23 points and went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. On Saturday, Aubrey Latham led three players in double figures with 19 points en route to a 69-61 win at Chestnut Hill. Post stands at 5-0 in the CACC and is atop the North Division, ahead of a trio of 3-1 squads.
USCIENCES - Sciences split their two games this week, winning big at Cheyney while dropping a hard fought contest at Dominican, snapping their three-game winning streak. Brianne Traub returned to the lineup against Dominican after missing a game due to a minor injury. Traub led the Devils in the set back with 18 points. Due to final exams, the Devils are off this week, but will return to action on December 19 when they host Holy Family University at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
WILMINGTON - The Wildcats went 2-1 this past week, winning back-to-back games for the first time since the 2009-10 season by defeating Chestnut Hill, 61-60, and Washington Adventist, 61-62. Looking to go for three in a row, the Wildcats fell to Felician on Saturday, 77-53. Freshman Tenicia Spence led the Wildcats in all three games, scoring 14 against both Chestnut Hill and Washington Adventist before pouring in 22 against Felician. It is the seventh time in 11 games that Spence has scored at least 20 points in a game. Tiaja Harrold scored 11 points against the Griffins, hitting three three-pointers, before leaving the game due to injury. The Wildcats host cross-town rivals Goldey-Beacom on Monday before hosting Lancaster Bible on Thursday this week.
