Anderson, Spence Take Home CACC Women's Basketball Weekly Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 18, 2013) – Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the reporting period ending February 17, 2013. Wilmington's Tenicia Spence (Baltimore, Md.) was named as the CACC Rookie of the Week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Jeanette Anderson (Jr., F, Lynn Mass.) Caldwell – Major: Communications
Anderson averaged 28.0 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 85.7 percent from the line in a 3-0 week for Caldwell. The junior started the week with a 30-point, 15-rebound effort in an 82-76 win over Concordia on Tuesday. On Thursday she tallied 29 points, 12 boards and two steals in a 69-53 victory against Chestnut Hill then notched 25 points in an 88-66 win at Wilmington. The communications major also pulled in eight rebounds and four steals in the victory over the Wildcats.
The Lynn Mass. Native shot 45% from the floor and 85.7% from the line on the week to help the Cougars extend their winning streak to a program-record 11 games.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tenicia Spence (Fr., G, Baltimore, Md.) Wilmington – Major: Criminal Justice
Spence averaged 31.5 points in two games last week, shooting 5-of-8 from distance and 12-of-13 from the foul line. After scoring 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting in an 80-60 loss at Philadelphia, the criminal justice major scored a career-high 32 points on 12-of-27 shooting in an 88-66 loss against Caldwell. Spence shot and impressive 62.5% from behind the arc, converting five of her eight attempts on the week while connecting on 92.3% (12-of-13) of her free throw attempts. The freshman guard also added eight steals and 12 rebounds in a 0-2 week for the Wildcats.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Krystina Agard (Sr., G, Queens, N.Y.) Concordia - Major: Psychology
Agard scored a season-high 36 points in a 78-72 victory over Georgian Court. Her 36-point performance was also a personal-best while playing for Concordia (she scored 42 points her freshman season at SUNY Old Westbury). Her 27.7 ppg average paced Concordia in a week that began with an 82-76 loss at Caldwell and ended with an 83-82 overtime loss to Philadelphia. The psychology major also tallied three blocks, 14 assists and 23 rebounds on the week.
Shauneia McPhearson (Sr., G, Chicago, Ill.) Georgian Court – Major: Psychology
McPhearson helped her team to a 1-1 week that saw the Lions fall 78-72 at Concordia and with 58-56 at Post. The senior guard scored 23 points at Concordia, including 7-for-8 from the charity stripe, for her team-leading fifth 20+ point game of the season. Two days later, McPhearson dropped in a game-high 18 points in Lions' thrilling 58-56 comeback victory at Post. On the week she also contributed 12 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and an assist. McPhearson has led the Lions in scoring in 16 of the team's 24 games and currently ranks 5th in scoring in the CACC with 17.0 ppg.
Becca Ruggear (Sr., F, Collingdale, Pa.) USciences - Major: Pharma Healthcare & Business
Ruggear recorded a "double double" in both games for the Devils last week. The senior from Collingdale, Pa. had 14 rebounds in each contest, equaling her season-high. She scored 20 points in just 27 minutes of play in a 75-60 triumph over Chestnut Hill then filled the stat sheet in 30 minutes of action vs. Bloomfield with 11 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and three steals. Ruggear averaged 61.0% shooting from the field and 75.0 from the line on the week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - Senior forward Shaniqua Bacote (Paterson, N.J.) notched a season-high 18 points and a game-high four steals in the Lady Deacons' home loss to Post University Tuesday, February 12. Sophomore center Tierra Scott (Bear, De.) posted a near double-double effort in the club's loss to the University of the Sciences Saturday afternoon, totaling 13 points and nine rebounds in the setback. Junior shooting guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.) came off the bench to lead Bloomfield in scoring in the loss to Sciences, totaling 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
CALDWELL - The Cougars moved into first place in the CACC North Division with three conference victories last week. The results also extended Caldwell's winning streak to 11, breaking the old program record of nine set in 1996-97 and 2010-11. Junior forward Jeanette Anderson led her team in scoring in all three games, starting the week with 30 points and 15 rebounds in an 82-76 victory over Concordia on Tuesday. She then registered 29 points and 12 boards in a 69-53 triumph over Chestnut Hill Thursday, and had 25 points, eight rebounds and four steals at Wilmington in an 88-66 win Saturday. Anderson has 12 "double doubles" on the season. The Cougars, who clinched their sixth straight CACC Tournament berth and a home game in the first round, close out the regular season with games at Bloomfield on Tuesday and at Concordia on Saturday.
CHESTNUT HILL - After taking CACC losses at the University of the Sciences, 75-60 on February 12, and Caldwell College, 69-53 on February 14, the Griffins collected their third win in five contests with a 69-60 victory over Felician College on February 16. With a 48.6% (17-of-35) first-half shooting effort that mounted the Griffins a 12-point, 42-30, halftime lead and kept the Golden Falcons circling. Senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) played a big part in the Griffin triumph, recording her second consecutive "double double" performance, 17 points and 11 rebounds; her fourth of the year.
CONCORDIA – The Clippers went 1-2 last week with losses against Caldwell and Philadelphia while picking up a 78-72 victory over Wilmington. Senior Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) scored a season-high 36 points, which is a personal best at Concordia, and came off 6-of-13 shooting from the field and an impressive 22-of-25 shooting display from the foul line. She also added a game-high 12 rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Concordia connected on nine three-point baskets in the game and shot 21-of-61 (34.4%) as the team has now won six of their last eight conference games. For the upcoming week, the Clippers (8-17, 7-10 CACC) will close out their regular-season schedule with home games against Felician on Tuesday and Caldwell on Saturday. Concordia is one game behind Bloomfield for the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Division.
DOMINICAN – The Lady Chargers posted a 1-2 record this week to now stand at 16-9 overall and 13-5 in conference play. This past Saturday, Dominican held their Senior Day where they honored five seniors: Bianca Harris, Lindsey Lopez, Chelsea Aronica, Shannon Lavelle and manager Schae Auffant. Dominican will take on Nyack College Tuesday night and will host a CACC Quarter-Final Game at the Hennessy Center on March 2.
FELICIAN – Felician had a roller-coaster week, earning a 35-point home victory over North 1st-place Dominican on Tuesday, before falling at South 6th-place Chestnut Hill on Saturday. Sophomore forward Ashley Morris scored a career-high 15 points against the Chargers. Sophomore guard Eliana Scanlon had 11 assists in the game, tied for the second-highest total in Felician history. Felician must win its final two games and get help to earn a CACC playoff berth.
GOLDEY-BEACOM - After earning victories over CACC North Division rivals Nyack and Dominican last week, the Lightning have set a school record by winning eight straight games. Now 18-8 overall and 15-2 in the CACC, the Lightning also set school records for most conference wins in a season (15) and consecutive conference victories (8). Senior forward Irene Hudson led the Lightning to the two wins last week, averaging 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. In addition, she shot 52.2 per cent from the field and has made at least 50.0 per cent of her field goal attempts in four consecutive games. She recorded her fifth "double double" of the season in the win over Nyack on Wednesday night, scoring 15 points with 12 rebounds. Hudson also contributed a game-high 21 points in the Lightning's 61-60 win over Dominican on Saturday. Meanwhile, senior guard Ashley Rosario set a school record by playing in her 111th career game against the Chargers on Saturday and scored the game-winning basket as time expired, capping off an 11-point effort. In addition, senior guard Jacinda Jones tied the Goldey-Beacom single-season record by making her 54th three-point field goal of the season against Dominican on Saturday. The Lightning, who have won 15 of their last 18 games, will close out the regular season this week with a pair of home games against CACC South Division opponents. After hosting Philadelphia University on Tuesday night, the Lightning will welcome nationally-ranked Holy Family on Saturday in a Senior Day contest.
GEORGIAN COURT – The Lions came back from a halftime deficit of 13 points Saturday to steal a 58-56 victory at Post University. It marked the eighth win of the year for GCU, the squad's most since going 8-18 in 2009-10. Georgian Court will honor seniors Shauneia McPhearson, Ebony Sellers, and Christina White prior to its season finale Tuesday evening vs. USciences.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family, ranked fifth in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, extended its winning streak to ten games after defeating Nyack (77-45) in the team's lone game of the week. With the win, Holy Family continues to hold a one game lead over Goldey-Beacom in the CACC South Division. Senior Erin Mann led the team with 18 points in the win versus Nyack. It marked the tenth straight game that Mann has scored in double-figures. Fellow classmate Ana Cruz chipped in 16 points after knocking down four three-pointers. Holy Family is currently 12-0 at home this season and will look to stay undefeated at the Campus Center as the Tigers host Chestnut Hill on Tuesday in the final home regular season contest of the season.
PHILADELPHIA – The Rams (12-11, 8-8 CACC) had a busy week with three contests, including two overtime games. Philadelphia opened the week with an 80-60 victory over Wilmington (Del.) on Feb. 12. Freshman forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) led the Rams with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Two days later, Philadelphia was edged out by Dominican (N.Y.) in overtime 76-74. Sophomore guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa.) scored a team-high 18 points. Senior forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, Pa.) (25 pts, 12 rebs) and Arnao (15 pts, 17 rebs) both had a "double double" in an 83-82 overtime win at Concordia (N.Y.) on Feb. 16. Arnao finished the week averaging 16.0 ppg and 15.7 rebs, while Blye had 15.3 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Arnao is the only CACC player to average a "double double" this season with 11.7 ppg and 12.5 rpg, which is sixth in Division II. This week, the Rams visit Delaware to take on Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday and Wilmington on Saturday.
WILMINGTON – The Wildcats trailed by as little as five points in the second half in each game this week before falling to CACC Tournament competitors Philadelphia and Caldwell. Freshman Tenicia Spence stole the show in each of the games, averaging 31.5 points per game for the week, scoring a career high 32 points on Saturday against Caldwell. She went 5-of-8 from three-point territory while also shooting 12-of-13 from the foul line. Spence recorded eight steals and averaged six rebounds in the two games. Lauren Brown scored 11 points and dished out a career-high seven assists against Caldwell while Amanda Walters grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds on Saturday as well. The Wildcats will play a make up a game with Bloomfield on Thursday before celebrating Senior Night on Saturday against Philadelphia.
