Mann, Arnao Take Home Weekly CACC Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 4, 2013) – Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the reporting period ending February 3, 2013. Philadelphia's Tori Arnao (Newton, Pa.) earned her second straight CACC Rookie of the Week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Erin Mann (Sr., C, West Chester, Pa.) Holy Family – Major: Sports Marketing-Management
The 6'1 senior led the Tigers to an 80-56 victory over Wilmington with a game-high 19 points after shooting nearly perfect from the field and knocking down eight of her nine shot attempts. Mann also grabbed six boards and blocked one shot while playing just 19 minutes in the victory. Two days later, Mann again led all scorers with a game-high 27 points after shooting 11-of-15 from the field for 73.3 percent. She also converted 5-of-9 from the free throw line and tallied seven rebounds, blocked three shots and recorded three steals. For the week, the senior center shot an impressive 79.2% from the floor to extend the eighth-ranked Tigers' latest winning streak to seven.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tori Arnao (Fr., F, Newton, Pa.) Philadelphia – Major: Health Sciences
Arnao picked up her second consecutive Rookie of the Week honor after helping her team to a 1-1 week. The Newton, Pa. native averaged 13.5 points and 14 rebounds per game for the Rams. On Tuesday she connected on 75% of her attempts from the floor on 6-of-8 shooting to record her 10th double-double of the year with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Georgian Court. Arnao was also credited with two assists in the 75-67 victory. The health sciences major turned in another strong performance at Bloomfield on Saturday, grabbing 14 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the 69-63 loss to the Deacons. Tori shot 33% from the field and 66.7% from the line in her 31 minutes on the floor. Arnao is currently eighth in Division II in rebounding with 11.7 per game.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Torey Jones (Sr., G, Providence, R.I.) Caldwell - Major: Psychology
Jones registered two 20-point games for the Cougars in a pair of CACC victories last week. The 5-8 senior tallied 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting and added six rebounds and five assists in a 61-42 win over first-place Dominican on Tuesday. On Saturday she paced her team with 20 points and five boards in a 75-65 victory over USciences on Saturday. For the week Jones averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 65.0 percent from the field.
Khamari Tellis (Sr., G, Chicago, Ill.) Nyack – Major: Psychology
The 5-9 guard averaged 20 points for the Warriors on the week, including a 26-point performance against Wilmington this past Saturday. After struggling offensively last Tuesday in a 79-34 loss to Bloomfield, Tellis sparked Nyack's offense on Thursday, scoring 27 points in a 66-47 loss at Dominican. She also added three steals and three blocks in the setback. On Saturday the psychology major continued her hot hand on offense, scoring 2 points on 7-for-12 shooting to lead her team to a 78-72 triumph over Wilmington. She also added eight rebounds, three assists and six blocks in the victory.
Shauneia McPhearson (Sr., G, Chicago, Ill. ) Georgian Court - Major: Pschology
McPhearson helped her team pick up its sixth victory of the season on Thursday in non-conference action against Washington Adventist. The senior guard scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 16 minutes on the floor as the Lions pulled out a 63-59 victory over Washington Adventist. In CACC action, McPhearson netted a season-high 29 points last Tuesday in a 75-67 setback at Philadelphia University. She also recorded six rebounds and six steals in the loss. The 5-8 senior dropped in another 21 points on Saturday in a 75-66 home loss to Dominican. For the week, she converted 11 of 12 free throws, averaged 21 points per game and shot 46% from the floor. So far this season McPhearson is GCU's leading scorer in 13 of 21 games and is averaging 16.8 points per game (6th in CACC).
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - The Lady Deacons finished the week a perfect 2-0, picking up conference victories over divisional rival Nyack College Tuesday, January 29 and South Division club Philadelphia University Saturday, February 2. Junior shooting guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.) led the Lady Deacons in scoring in each of the two contests, notching 18 points in Bloomfield's victory over Nyack Tuesday and 20 points against the Rams Saturday afternoon. Each of Castro's standout scoring performances were game highs over the two-game stretch. Rookie guard Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals in a solid all-around effort against the Warriors Tuesday, while junior forward Nakaida Thomas (Trenton, N.J.) totaled 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a standout performance against Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Dre'Shonda Williams (Piscataway, N.J.) totaled 13 points and a game-high four assists in the club's victory over Philadelphia Saturday.
CALDWELL - The Cougars won a pair of CACC games last week to extend their winning streak to seven games. On Tuesday, senior guard Torey Jones had 20 points and junior forward Jeanette Anderson added 17 points in a 61-42 victory over first-place Dominican. Then on Saturday, Jones turned in her third 20-point performance in her last four games to lead Caldwell past USciences, 75-65. Anderson had 14 points and seven boards, while senior center Gillian Felix registered 10 points and 13 rebounds. The two wins give the Cougars a 6-1 record in conference games at home. Caldwell visits Nyack on Wednesday and hosts Chestnut Hill on Saturday.
CHESTNUT HILL - Holding Concordia College to an 18.9% (10-of-53) shooting performance, Chestnut Hill College claimed their first CACC victory of the season with a 20-point, 58-38, triumph over the Clippers on Saturday, February 2. Headlining a balanced team effort, sophomore guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) hit four three-pointers (4-of-10, 40.0%) and a layup to lead the Griffins with 14 points.
CONCORDIA – Concordia dropped a 58-38 decision against Chestnut Hill on Saturday in their only game last week. Sophomore Megan Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) led Concordia with 10 points while adding three rebounds and three steals. Junior Victoria Jones (Staten Island, N.Y.) would add eight points and a team-high nine rebounds as the Clippers shot a season-low 18.9% (10-of-53) from the field. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak. For the upcoming week, Concordia (6-15, 5-8 CACC) will host Bloomfield on Wednesday as the Clippers will look to sweep the season series against the Deacons and then close out the week hosting Georgian Court on Saturday.
DOMINICAN – The women's basketball team went 2-1 in action last week to now stand at 14-7 overall and 11-3 in conference play. KC Jentzen averaged 15.3 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game while Bianca Harris averaged 11.7 point per game and 7.7 rebounds for the week.
GOLDEY-BEACOM - After posting a pair of wins over University of the Sciences and Felician last week, the Lightning extended their win streak to five straight games and improved their record to 15-8 overall and 12-2 in the CACC. In addition, the Lightning secured their fourth consecutive appearance in the CACC Tournament after the 61-47 victory over Felician. The Lightning, who have won 12 of their last 15 games, have also won four consecutive home games. Senior guard Devonne Richardson made the 100th start of her college career in the win over Felician, becoming just the second player in school history to start 100 career games. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Taylor Leonard scored a career-high 11 points in the win over Felician on Saturday, marking the first double-digit scoring effort of her career. The Lightning will begin a three-game road trip this week by visiting Georgian Court and Nyack.
GEORGIAN COURT – The Lions' 63-59 victory over Washington Adventist University last Wednesday marked their seventh of the season, eclipsing the team's 2011-12 win total of six. The win was also GCU's first vs. a non-conference foe since a victory at Mercy College back on November 22, 2011. Georgian Court hosts Goldey-Beacom Wednesday night before concluding the week at Concordia College on Saturday.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family, ranked eighth in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, extended its winning streak to seven games after a pair of conference victories this past week. The Tigers defeated Wilmington (80-56) on Tuesday and then capped the week with a 75-63 at Post on Saturday. Senior Erin Mann led the Tigers in scoring in both games as she averaged 23.0 points per game. During the current seven game winning-streak, Mann has led the Tigers in scoring in each victory. Furthermore, Mann was recently named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 1 First Team for the first time in her career. In the victory at Wilmington, freshman Erin Fenningham scored a career-high eight points. Junior Mary Ellen McCollum scored a season-high 15 points in the win at Post.
PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia (10-9, 6-6 CACC) posted a 1-1 record last week with a 75-67 win over Georgian Court on Jan. 29 and a 69-63 loss to Bloomfield on Feb. 2. Senior forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown E.) scored 13 points against the Deacons to become the 28th Philadelphia University women's basketball player to net 1,000 career points. Sophomore guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) had a career-high 25 points against Georgian Court and 16 against Bloomfield. Schacker is averaging 18.0 ppg over the last five games. Freshman forward Tori Arnao recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Georgian Court. Arnao is eighth in Division II in rebounding with 11.7 per game. This week Philadelphia is at Holy Family on Wednesday and hosts Dominican (N.Y.) on Saturday.
WILMINGTON – Tenicia Spence scored a team high 25 points on Saturday, but the Wildcats dropped both of their games this week. They first squared off against eighth-ranked Holy Family on Tuesday, falling 80-55 before dropping a 78-72 decision to Nyack on Saturday. Spence averaged 15 points per game for the week while Lauren Brown scored 13.5 points per game. Tashea Plummer and Danielle Thomas also scored 10.5 points per game each for the week. Brown led the team with seven assists on the week while Spence and Brown each recorded five steals. The Wildcats go back to the road this week as they head to Chestnut Hill on Tuesday before traveling to Bloomfield on Saturday.
USCIENCES – The Devils dropped both their games last week, losing 73-57 to Goldey-Beacom and 75-65 to Caldwell College. Elsebeth Birman led four players in double figures with 16 points in the loss to Goldey-Beacom while Brianne Traub scored 24 to pace the Devils at Caldwell. Traub, the CACC's leading scorer, is currently ranked 30th in the country in scoring according to the last NCAA Division II statistics report. The Devils do not play again until Saturday, February 9, 2013 when they travel to face Post University.
