Richardson, Arnao Earn CACC Weekly Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 28, 2013) – Goldey-Beacom's Devonne Richardson (Baltimore, Md.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the reporting period ending January 27, 2013. Philadelphia's Tori Arnao (Newton, Pa.) was selected as the CACC Rookie of the Week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Devonne Richardson (Sr., G, Baltimore, Md.) Goldey-Beacom – Major: Psychology
Devonne led the Lightning to pair of CACC wins last week while averaging a "triple double". Richardson recorded the first "triple double" in Goldey-Beacom women's basketball history against Post with 14 points, 11 rebounds and career-high 12 assists. She also became first player in CACC to record a "triple double" this season and became the sixth "triple double" by any player in NCAA Division II so far this season. The senior psychology major also scored 10 points with 10 rebounds and nine assists in a win over the Rams, narrowly missing recording another "triple double" in Goldey-Beacom's 76-52 victory over Philadelphia. Devonne also became Goldey-Beacom's all-time rebounding leader in the win over Philadelphia and currently ranks fourth in CACC in rebounding this season with 9.6 average.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tori Arnao (Fr., F, Newton, Pa.) Philadelphia – Major: Health Sciences
Tori averaged 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for Philadelphia last week. The freshman forward averaged 47.4% shooting from the field and 60% from the line as the Rams dropped a pair of home games to Goldey-Beacom (76-52) and Caldwell (66-51). Arnao also contributed two assists, two steals and a block to her team's efforts on the week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Krystina Agard (Sr., G, Queens, N.Y. ) Concordia - Major: Psychology
Agard led Concordia to a 2-0 week with wins over Bloomfield (68-65) and Wilmington (83-77). The senior from Queens recorded 24 points, 15 rebounds and five steals over the Deacons and scored 34 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and recorded four assists against the Wildcats. Her performance led the Clippers to their 4th straight victory for the first time since the 1986-87 season.
Erin Mann (Sr., C, West Chester, Pa.) Holy Family – Major: Sports Marketing-Management
With her first point and rebound in the 86-53 victory at Chestnut Hill, Mann became the third player in program history to score at least 1,600 points and record 800 rebounds in a career. The West Chester, Pa. native averages 22.5 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Tigers in her record-setting weekend. Saturday, Erin contributed 27 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in a 68-46 triumph over Bloomfield.
Aubry Latham (Jr., F, Mystic, Conn.) Post - Major: Sport Management
In a 1-2 week for Post, Latham averaged 18.7 points per game and scored a game-high 25 points in a 64-49 win over Mercy on Monday. She shot 50% from the field against the Mavericks. For the week Latham shot 48.8% from the field, 50% from distance and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the foul line. After she netted 20 points against North Division-leading Dominican, she rounded out the week with 11 points against Goldey-Beacom, nine of which came in the second stanza.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - Senior Dre'Shonda Williams (Piscataway, N.J.) totaled a team-high 16 points off the bench in the Lady Deacons' loss to Concordia College Wednesday night, the highest point total of her final season with the Bloomfield College women's basketball program. Junior guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.) continued her stellar campaign with 14 points off the bench in the loss, while rookie guard Nahja Carter (Neptune, N.J.) tallied nine points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the loss. Carter was the leading scorer for Bloomfield in their loss at Holy Family University Saturday afternoon, tallying 12 points, four rebounds and four steals in the setback.
CALDWELL - The Cougars extended their winning streak to five games with CACC victories over Nyack and Philadelphia last week. Senior guard Torey Jones registered 20 points, three assists and three steals in a 77-55 win at home over Nyack. Sophomore forward Emily Caswell poured in a career-high 27 points to lift Caldwell past Philadelphia, 66-51 in Philadelphia. The win over the Rams was the 100th career victory for head coach Linda Cimino, who is 100-87 in six-plus seasons at Caldwell. Cimino is the second coach in the program's history to reach 100 victories, following Bob Costello, who won 112 games from 1994 to 2000. This week the Cougars host Dominican and USciences on Tuesday and Saturday, respectively.
CHESTNUT HILL - On January 23, the efficient and effective play of #11 Holy Family University overshadowed a milestone night for Chestnut Hill College's senior forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) as the Tigers topped the Griffins 86-53 in a CACC contest. Alexander became the sixth member of the program's 1,000 career-points club with an early second half three-point basket. Later on January 26, free throws proved to be the determining factor at Dominican College, as an otherwise even affair ended in a 57-48 loss for Chestnut Hill. After scoring the game's first three buckets, the Lady Chargers made 14-of-16 (87.5%) at the charity stripe to help them lead the whole way. Sophomore guard Lila Jones (Lansdale, Pa.) headlined the Griffins first-half effort while Alexander contributed 14 of her game-high 18 points in the closing period.
CONCORDIA – Concordia went 2-0 this past week with wins over Bloomfield and Wilmington as the Clippers have now won four straight games for the first time since the 1986-87 season. Senior Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) led Concordia with 24 points and 15 rebounds while adding five assists in the Clippers' 68-65 win over the Deacons. Senior Sade Jones (Patterson, N.J.) added 12 points while sophomore Megan Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points and junior Tara-Ann Rock (Queens, N.Y.) finished with 10 points. In Saturday's 83-77 victory over Wilmington, Agard led Concordia with 34 points which included a perfect 12-of-12 performance from the foul line and 17 rebounds while Victoria Jones (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 11 rebounds. Both players recorded personal best in points as members of the Clippers while Agard's rebound totals were also a career-high at Concordia. Sophomore Anjali Moncrieffe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 10 points. For the upcoming week, the Clippers (6-14, 5-7 CACC) will travel to Chestnut Hill on Saturday in their lone game regular season of the season.
DOMINICAN – The Lady Chargers went 3-0 in action last week with victories over Felician College, Post University and Chestnut Hill College to improve to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Dominican has won three straight contests and hosted the 12th Annual Sue Heller Memorial Basketball game on Jan. 26 where junior Nicole Welton was the recipient of the Sue Heller Memorial Scholarship.
FELICIAN - Junior Jac'Quel Saunders recorded her first career double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds in a Jan. 21 loss at North first-place Dominican. In each of Felician's losses on the week, Saunders was the only Golden Falcon to score in double digits. In Saturday's loss at USciences, senior Shakeema Green made her first start in 46 games as a Golden Falcon, and her 27 minutes was one off a season high.
GOLDEY-BEACOM - After earning a pair of victories over Philadelphia University and Post last week, the Lightning extended their win streak to three straight games. Now 13-8 overall and 10-2 in the CACC, the Lightning have won 10 of their last 13 games after a five-game losing streak. Senior guard Devonne Richardson had a pair of historic outings for the Lightning last week. In Goldey-Beacom's 76-52 victory over the Rams on Wednesday night, the Baltimore, Md. native became the program's career rebounds leader and narrowly missed recording a "triple double" after scoring 10 points with 10 rebounds and 9 assists. But, she accomplished the feat in the Lightning's 68-45 triumph over Post by scoring a game-high 14 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists. It marked just the sixth "triple double" in NCAA Division I this season and the first by any CACC player. The Lightning's leading scorer with a 12.3 average, Richardson also ranks fourth in the CACC by averaging 9.6 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, senior guard Jacinda Jones scored a season-high 22 points in the win over Philadelphia University on Wednesday night and became the Lightning's all-time leader in three-point field goals after sinking four of eight attempts in the victory over Post. In two games last week, Jones made 11 of 19 attempts from beyond the arc. The Lightning will play two games this week and attempt to secure a playoff berth. After visiting the University of the Sciences on Tuesday night, the Lightning will host Felician on Saturday afternoon at the Jones Center.
GEORGIAN COURT – The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad reached the .500 mark at home and earned its sixth CACC victory of the campaign as the Lions downed visiting Nyack College, 71-56, Saturday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center Arena. The victory matches last season's win total of six with seven games remaining on the year. GCU takes to the road this Tuesday night for a much-anticipated rematch vs. Philadelphia University. The Lions upset the Lady Rams, 66-59, back on December 13 in the Wellness Center. The Lions will return home on Thursday for a non-conference contest vs. Washington Adventist University then Dominican College comes to Lakewood for a Saturday afternoon meeting, during which the Lions will host its award-winning National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family, ranked 11th in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improved to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in the CACC after picking up a pair of victories this past week. The Tigers defeated Chestnut Hill, 86-53, on Wednesday and capped the week with a 68-46 victory versus Bloomfield on Saturday. Against Chestnut Hill, senior Erin Mann became the third player in program history to score at least 1,600 points and grab at least 800 rebounds in a career. Mann finished the game with 18 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes of action. She then scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Bloomfield to record her eighth double-double of the season. Junior Maggie Serratelli scored in double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time this season with 17 points vs. the Griffins and 13 against the Deacons.
PHILADELPHIA – The Rams fell to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the CACC after conference losses to Goldey-Beacom (76-52) and Caldwell (66-51) last week. Sophomore guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa.) averaged 15.0 points in the two games, including 18 points against the Lightning. Freshman forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) had 10.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg last week. Arnao posted her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds against Caldwell. Senior forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown E.) is now 21 points away from the joining the 1,000-point club. This week, the Rams close out their four-game home-stand against Georgian Court on Tuesday before heading to Bloomfield on Saturday.
POST - Post went 1-2 last week and dropped a pair of conference tilts to Dominican (65-61) and Goldey-Beacom (68-45). This week the Eagles will take on Felician on Jan. 29, and host nationally-ranked Holy Family on Saturday, Feb. 2.
WILMINGTON – The Wildcats held a lead as late as 9:41 left in regulation in their only game of the week last week at Concordia on Saturday. The game, which saw 13 ties, was last knotted at 77-77 with 1:13 remaining before the Clippers hit six free throws down the stretch to take the victory. The Wildcats had three players score 18 or more points, led by Tenicia Spence's team high 19 points off the bench. Senior Danielle Thomas collected 18 points in 16 minutes off the bench while freshman Tiaja Harrold also scored 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting in only her fifth start of the season. Tashea Plummer led the way on the board, grabbing a team high 14 rebounds. The Wildcats return home this week, squaring off against Holy Family on Tuesday and Nyack on Saturday.
USCIENCES – Jessica Sylvester (Trevose, Pa.) had a career high 28 points in the Devils win on Saturday against Felician. The sophomore guard set career bests with five three point field goals and ten field goals overall. Her five three point field goals move her into 9th place on the Devils all-time three-point field goals made list with 86 for her career (in 49 career games). Brianne Traub (Wayne, N.J.) led the Devils in their win over Georgian Court with 19 points, eclipsing the 800-career point mark for her career.
Also in the Devils win over Georgian Court, seniors Becca Ruggear (Collingdale, Pa.) and Elsebeth Birman (Silver Spring, Md.) both reached career milestones. Ruggear recorded her 500th career rebound, becoming just the 16th women's player in school history to do so. Birman recorded her 200th career assist as a Devil, and is also just the 16th women's player in school history to do so. Ruggear also recorded her 100th career steal and with her nine rebounds over the two games, moved into 15th place on the Devils all-time list with 507 for her career. Birman had 11 assists over the two games to move into a tie for 14th place on the Devils all-time list with 208 for her career.
In the most recent NCAA Division II statistics report (1/25), Traub is ranked 19th nationally in scoring (18.8/gm.); Birman ranks 52nd in assists (4.4/gm.) and Isabella Ross (Philadelphia, Pa.) 56th in blocked shots (1.53/gm.). As a team the Devils are 15th in three-point field goal % defense, with teams making just 25.2% of their three-point attempts against them. Sciences is also 47th in blocked shots (4.1/gm) and 60th in assists (15.1/gm.). The Devils will host Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday (6 p.m. start) before traveling to Caldwell College on Saturday.
