Elmeshad, Brooks, Al-Shrouf & Edwards Claim Major Awards in CACC Men's Track & Field in 2018
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 21, 2018) -- Hussen Elmeshad (Georgian Court University), Daveigh Brooks (Bloomfield College), Alaa Al-Shrouf (GCU) and Jahvar Edwards (Bloomfield) on Monday were named major award winners in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) for the 2018 Men's Outdoor Track & Field season, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Nominating and voting for the major award winners was conducted by the league's 10 head coaches in the sport.
Elmeshad was named the CACC Men's Track Athlete of the Year, as he had a sensational showing at the CACC Championship earlier this month. He won the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:41.31, while also placing second in the 1,500 meters with a mark of 4:01.78.
Brooks was named the CACC Men's Track Rookie of the Year after he posted a pair of wins at the CACC Championship. He won the 400 meters in a time of 48.94, while also being a member of the Bears victorious 4x400 relay team that posted a time of 3:19.70.
Al-Shrouf was crowned as the CACC Men's Field Athlete of the Year, as he posted a trio of top-three performances in the conference championship including winning the shot put with an effort of 46-0 1/2. He also placed second in the discus (134-4) and third in the hammer throw (135-6).
Edwards was named the CACC Men's Field Rookie of the Year after having a strong debut season at the collegiate level in the high jump. He won the event at the CACC Championship with a leap of 6-9 1/2. Edwards placed 19th in the high jump at the Penn Relays in late April, while also placing fourth in the event at the All-American Invitational.
In addition to those student-athletes earning major awards, Bloomfield's Lisa Morgan-Richman was named the CACC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year and Chestnut Hill College won the Men's Team Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating sportsmanship and respect for the opposition during the season.
Morgan-Richman was named the coach of the year after guiding the Bears to the program's first CACC Championship in the sport. Several Bloomfield athletes posted numerous school-record times on the track and marks in field events throughout the season.
