Four Women's Track & Field Standouts Garner Major Awards from 2017 CACC Track & Field Season
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 24, 2017) -- Four Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's outdoor track & field standouts -- Georgian Court University's Jessica Handsaker and Stephanie Bock, Caldwell University's Alexandra Greaves & Bloomfield College's Jazmine Wiggs -- on Wednesday were named major award winners for the 2017 season, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Voting for the major awards was conducted by the league's 10 head coaches in the sport.
Handsaker was named the 2017 Women's Track Athlete of the Year, while Bock was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Year. Greaves was tabbed the 2017 Women's Track Rookie of the Year and Wiggs was crowned as the Women's Field Rookie of the Year.
Handsaker was named track athlete of the year after picking up wins in both the 800 and 1,500-meter races at the CACC Championship earlier this month to help guide the Lions to their fourth-straight conference crown. She turned in a first-place time of 2:22.07 in the 800 and then registered a mark of 4:54.80 in the 1,500. She also ran a leg for GCU's 4x400-meter relay team that placed second at the meet.
Bock turned in a pair of first-place performances in the throws at the CACC meet, as she won the shot put (40-6) and hammer (141-9). Those showings, along with another victory in the shot put at the TCNJ Invitational, enabled Bock to be crowned the women's field athlete of the year.
Greaves was outstanding during her first CACC Championship event, as she won both the 100 and 200 meters in blazing times of 12.63 and 26.14, respectively. She also claimed a win in the 100 at the Ramapo Invitational earlier this season as well.
Wiggs used a first and second place showing in the long jump and triple jump at the CACC Championship to claim the league's women's field rookie of the year honor. She lept a distance of 18-2 in the long jump to win the individual title, while turning in a second-place leap of 37-6 in the triple. She competed in six events at the conference championship and scored in five of those.
Georgian Court's Mike Murawski was named the 2017 BSN Sports CACC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for guiding the Lions to their fourth-consecutive conference team championship.
The other major award handed out on Wednesday was the 2017 CACC Team Sportsmanship Award, which was presented to Caldwell University for demonstrating outstanding character and class throughout the entire season and the CACC Championship meet.
