2017 CACC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Award Winners Announced
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 24, 2017) -- Three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's outdoor track & field standouts on Wednesday -- Chestnut Hill College's Ziggy Fisher and Georgian Court University's Michael Brazzel & Leon White -- were named major award winners for the 2017 season, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara.
Fisher was named both the 2017 Men's Track Athlete and Rookie of the Year, while Brazzel was crowned the Men's Field Athlete of the Year and White was tabbed as the Men's Field Rookie of the Year. Voting for the major awards was conducted by the league's nine head coaches in the sport.
Fisher was named both the track athlete and rookie of the year after a splendid performance at the 2017 CACC Championship earlier this month in Lakewood, N.J. Fisher was crowned champion in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter races, as he logged times of 15:42.31 and 33:08.68. Fisher was also a strong runner in the 1,500 meters throughout the year, as he placed first in the event at the Golden Ram Invitational with a mark of 4:13.51.
Brazzel, who is getting set to compete in the javelin at the NCAA Division II National Championship event this weekend, claimed the league's title in the event with a season-best toss of 70.79 meters (232-3). He also took home victories in the javelin at the TCNJ Lions Invitational and the Shippensburg University Invitational. In four of five meets this season, Brazzel met the NCAA automatic qualifier mark in the javelin, while ranking third overall in the nation.
White had a spectacular debut at the CACC Championship, as he won both the discus (142-6) and hammer throws (150-9), while also placing third in the shot put. He scored in all four throwing events to help GCU claim its third-consecutive CACC Men's Track & Field Championship.
Bloomfield College's Lisa Morgan-Richman was named the 2017 BSN Sports CACC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year for her strong work in guiding the Bears to lofty heights during the season. Under her guidance, Bloomfield celebrated six CACC individual or relay titles at the 2017 conference championship, while placing second overall with a team score of 216 points.
The other major award handed out on Wednesday was the 2017 CACC Men's Track & Field Team Sportsmanship Award, which was presented to Nyack College for not only demonstrating outstanding character and class at the league meet, but throughout the entire outdoor season.
