GCU Women's Track & Field Claims Fourth-Straight CACC Championship

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (May 8, 2017) -- The Georgian Court University women's track & field team made it four titles in a row Sunday, as the Lions posted a first-place score of 222.50 to claim the 2017 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Track & Field Championship on the GCU campus in Lakewood, N.J.
GCU celebrated eight titles on the day, including two on the track and six in field events. Jessica Handsaker collected both titles on the track for the Lions, as she was victorious in the 800 meters (2:22.07) and the 1,500 meters (4:54.80).
Lion throwers and jumpers also played a significant role in helping Georgian Court attain the team championship. In the jumps, Sarah Zollner placed first in the javelin with a mark of 7-5 3/4, while rookie Lyric Green won the triple jump in a leap of 37-1.
Stephanie Bock led Lion throwers, as she collected a pair of individual titles in the shot put and hammer throw. In the shot, Bock uncorked an effort of 40-7 1/2, and in the hammer, the freshman turned in a first-place mark of 141-11. Stacey Labissiere won the discus with a toss of 119-0. Farris Ellington then won the javelin with a throw of 131-8.
Bloomfield College and Caldwell University finished in second and third place, respectively, with scores of 123.50 and 100 points.
Bloomfield got titles in both the track and field events, including in the long jump from Jazmine Wiggs with a jump of 17-4. Brionna Singleton won the high jump for the Bears with a leap of 5-5 3/4.
On the track, both relay events were won by Bloomfield, as the 4x100-meter relay team won its race in a time of 49.44, while the 4x400 squad placed first with a time of 4:06.81. The 4x100 team featured Bobbi Ayres, Makisha Dorval, Ayanna Fate and Felicia Haidara, while the 4x400 unit was comprised of Ayres, Fate, Haidara and Wiggs. Ayres was also victorious in the 400-meter race with a first-place time of 58.79.
Caldwell celebrated titles in the 100 and 200-meter sprints, as freshman Alexandra Greaves won both events in times of 12.82 and 26.84.
