2022-23 CACC MBB All-Conference & Major Awards
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 28, 2023) -- Thomas Jefferson University standout Erik Timko on Tuesday was named the 2022-23 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Year, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Timko's honor highlighted a lengthy list of all-conference honorees and major award winners, as the voting for the league's awards was conducted by the CACC's 13 head coaches in the sport.
Joining Timko as major award winners were a trio of Caldwell University Cougars, including Darnell Evans (CACC Rookie of the Year), Jarnel Rancy (CACC Defensive Player of the Year) and Dean Johnson (CACC Coach of the Year). Felician University won the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award.
Timko is leading the league in scoring at 23.0 points per game, while shooting 54 percent from the field. He is also averaging 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Timko leads the league in field goals made (212) and three-pointers (89), while also ranking second in three-point percentage at 47 percent. He logged double-figures in scoring in all but one regular season game including topping 30 points in a game six times. Timko helped guide Jefferson to a 16-11 overall record and 12-5 mark in conference play during the regular season to lift the Rams to the CACC South Division Championship. Timko was also named to the All-CACC First Team.
Evans averaged 18.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game during the regular season to help lead Caldwell to the CACC North Division Championship (18-9, 14-4 CACC). Evans posted double-figures in scoring in 25-of-27 regular season games and topped 20 points 11 times. He also went for over 30 points in a pair of contests. Evans was the lone rookie to make the All-CACC First Team.
Rancy is not just the conference's leading shot blocker, but paces all of NCAA Division II. He is averaging 4.4 blocks a game, while totaling 120 overall. His average is a full point higher than the second-best shot blocker in the nation. Rancy's blocks per game is also the best average across all three divisions of the NCAA. He has swatted away multiple shots in 24 games and had a season-high 10 in a victory at the University of Bridgeport on Feb. 8. Rancy, who was named to the All-CACC Third Team, is also averaging 6.0 rebounds a game.
Johnson was named the CACC's top coach as he guided the Cougars to an 18-9 mark in his inaugural season as head men's coach at Caldwell. The Cougars are not just the CACC's North Champions, but are also the No. 1 overall seed for this week's CACC Championship tournament.
