Wilmington Men, Philadelphia Women Earn 2013-2014 Alfred R. Restaino Sr. Cups
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Wilmington University men and the Philadelphia University women have captured the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Alfred R. Restaino Sr. Cups in an announcement made today by Commissioner Dan Mara.
The cups are awarded annually to the institutions that perform at the highest level in all CACC-sponsored sports. The point system used for the award takes into account each athletic program’s finish in both the CACC 2013-2014 regular season and conference tournaments. Each institution receives a combined point total and the sum is then divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.
Wilmington (11.85 total point average) claimed the Men’s Restaino Cup for the fifth-straight year on the strength of conference championships in cross-country, golf and the regular-season title in baseball. The Wildcats amassed 59.25 points in the five sports the program sponsors. Wilmington claimed two of the eight possible CACC Men’s Championships.
Dominican College finished second in the men’s standings with an average of 11.00 points. The Chargers placed second in the soccer standings and the basketball North Division. In addition, Dominican baseball finished third in the baseball tournament. Philadelphia University (10.79) placed third in the final results by capturing the regular season South Division and tournament titles in basketball and the tournament trophy in soccer. Chestnut Hill College (10.17) placed fourth with a consistent effort in all six conference-sponsored sports and Post University (10.08) finished fifth after adding the soccer regular season trophy to its ledger.
Completing the men’s Restaino Cup standings are Nyack College (9.05), Concordia College (8.79), Bloomfield College (8.65), Felician College (8.30), Holy Family University (8.00), the University of the Sciences (7.95), Caldwell College (7.44), Goldey-Beacom College (7.25) and first-year program Georgian Court University (5.08).
On the women’s side, the Philadelphia U. Rams paced the Restaino Cup standings with an average of 11.91 powered by the South Division regular season and tournament championship in lacrosse, the South Division regular season title in basketball and tied for the South Division regular season crown in volleyball. In addition, PhilaU finished second in the cross-country championship and third in the inaugural track and field championship. The program advanced to at least the semifinals in five of the six women’s CACC tournaments.
Caldwell and Georgian Court tied for second with an average of 10.81 points. The Cougars finished second in the overall standings by winning the soccer tournament and claimed the softball regular season championship as well as the North Division title in volleyball. The Lions captured the first CACC track & field championship, the volleyball tournament crown and North Division regular season title in women’s lacrosse.
Dominican finished fourth (10.32), Holy Family claimed fifth (9.97) by capturing the regular season title in soccer and Wilmington placed sixth (9.75) on the strength of its softball tournament championship.
Rounding out the Women’s Restaino Cup standings are Nyack (8.71), Bloomfield (8.50), Felician (8.05), USciences (7.95), Post (7.89), Chestnut Hill (7.06), Goldey-Beacom (6.29) and Concordia (5.63).
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference is an NCAA Division II Conference composed of 14 institutions in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The member institutions are Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Chestnut Hill College, Concordia (N.Y.) College, Dominican (N.Y.) College, Felician College, Georgian Court University, Goldey-Beacom College, Holy Family University, Nyack College, Philadelphia University, Post University, University of the Sciences and Wilmington University.
