RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Members of the Felician College women's volleyball team have spent their own time and money this month to assist in the fight against breast cancer. Now, they are hoping members of the College community will do the same.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and pink is the color of the breast cancer awareness ribbon. In that spirit, the Golden Falcons recently took a team outing to a local hair salon that was donating 50 percent of its proceeds on pink hair extensions and feather extensions to breast cancer research.
"Most of the team has more than one (extension)," said junior Jenna Matesic, a three-year starter. "As a team, we spent $275. It was a chance to do something good, and a good team bonding experience as well."
Additionally, for the second consecutive year, the team will host a "Dig Pink" Night at a home match. This year's event will be this Thursday, October 20, at 7 p.m. versus Nyack College, and to make the night special, the team once again dug into its own pockets.
"We paid for our own pink jerseys, shoelaces, socks and headbands," Matesic said. "We're just trying to stay passionate. It's a cause we're into as a team – two players have grandmothers that have been affected by breast cancer, plus both of our coach's (Amber Butler) grandmothers. This is something for us to get hyped up about and try to make a difference."
Admission to Thursday's match is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be donated to the northern New Jersey chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The team will also sell T-shirts, bracelets and snacks and drinks in an attempt to generate funds.
Felician plays its home matches at Job Gymnasium on its Rutherford campus. For more information, contact coach Amber Butler at ButlerA@felician.edu.
