Felician's Plummer, Wilmington's Spence Earn CACC Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 21, 2013) – Felician College's Trina Plummer (West Babylon, N.Y.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the reporting period ending January 20, 2013. Wilmington College's Tenicia Spence (Baltimore, Md.) was selected as the CACC Rookie of the Week.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Trina Plummer (Jr., F, West Babylon, N.Y.) Felician – Major: Accounting
Plummer scored a career-high 27 points with 12 rebounds in a 64-57 victory last Tuesday at Nyack. Trina earned nearly half of her points from the line, connecting on 13 of her 18 attempts. She also pulled in eight offensive boards in the victory. The West Babylon native additionally contributed two assists, two steals and two blocks in her 39 minutes on the floor for the Golden Falcons.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tenicia Spence (Fr., G, Baltimore, Md.) Wilmington – Major: Criminal Justice
Spence set a new career high with 31 points, tying for the tenth-most points in a single contest in Wilmington program history. The criminal justice major converted on 8-of-11 attempts from the foul line while shooting 11-for-23 from the floor. The freshman also grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded a steal in the 68-65 loss at Georgian Court.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Irene Hudson (Sr., F, Syracuse, N.Y.) Goldey-Beacom - Major: Business Administration
Led Lightning to a 47-41 victory over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday to record the team's 8th win in the last 11 games. The Syracuse native tallied the 10th double-double of her college career with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Irene connected on 4-of-5 shot attempts and was perfect from the line, converting on all four of her attempts. She also contributed a career-high five steals in helping the Lightning beat the Griffins for the seventh straight time. Hudson currently ranks second on the team with an 11.8 points per game scoring average.
Erin Mann (Sr., C, West Chester, Pa.) Holy Family – Major: Sports Marketing-Management
Recorded her 7th double-double of the season to lead the Tigers past USciences in the team's lone game of the week. The senior standout connected on 8-of-15 attempts from the floor as she paced the Tigers with 20 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and five blocks in the victory. Mann will enter Wednesday's game at Chestnut Hill needing only one more point to reach 1,600-career points and one more rebound to reach 800 for her career. In doing so, she'll become the third player in program history to score at least 1,600 points and record 800 rebounds in a career.
Aubry Latham (Jr., F, Mystic, Conn.) Post - Major: Sport Management
Latham became the fifth player in program history to net 1,000 points as she totaled a game-high 21 points, 13 of which came in the first half, against Concordia on Tuesday night. She also added four steals and four assists in the 84-70 setback at Concordia.
CACC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - Bloomfield won its only contest of the week this week, picking up a pivotal home win over CACC North Division rival Dominican College. Rookie guard Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) totaled 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and a career-high nine steals in the win, posting one of the best all-around performances of her first campaign with the Lady Deacons. Fellow rookie Nahja Carter (Neptune, N.J.) notched 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, while junior guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.) totaled 10 points off the bench.
CHESTNUT HILL - After a first half of poor shooting, on January 15, Chestnut Hill College threatened Goldey-Beacom College's 14-point, 29-15, halftime advantage with a barrage of three-point baskets that left the Griffins down two points, 33-31, with 12:30 to play. Sophomore guard Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) led the Griffins' perimeter push, but behind the play of senior forward Irene Hudson (Syracuse, N.Y.) the Lightning delayed the rally and ensured a CACC season sweep with a 47-41 victory.
CONCORDIA – Concordia won their only game this past week with a 84-70 victory over Post. The win gave the Clippers a split against the Eagles in their season series. Senior Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) led Concordia with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field while junior Victoria Jones (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore Mariah Berry (Southington, Conn.) came off to bench to add 14 points while sophomore Megan Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded 13 points and senior Sade Jones (Patterson, N.J.) dropped 11 points. The Clippers held a 53-39 rebounding advantage while shooting 28-of-65 (43.1%) from the field. The victory snaps a six-game losing streak for Concordia against the Eagles that extends back to Jan. 2010. For the upcoming week, Concordia will travel to Bloomfield on Wednesday for their first of two regular season matchups and then host Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday in their lone game of the season.
DOMINICAN – The Lady Chargers fell to Bloomfield College in their only game this week to now stand at 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the CACC.
GOLDEY-BEACOM - After posting a 47-41 victory over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday night, the Lightning upped their record to 11-8 overall and 8-2 in the CACC. It marked the Lightning's 8th victory in the last 11 games and the seventh straight victory over the Griffins. Senior forward Irene Hudson led the Lightning to the victory by tallying her 10th career double-double. The Syracuse, N.Y. native scored 12 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds while adding a career-high five steals. In addition, sophomore forward Chelsea Grover scored a season-high 13 points in the victory while senior forward Akilah Sewell had a career-high six blocks, which are the most by a CACC player this season. Meanwhile, senior guard Devonne Richardson tallied five rebounds against the Griffins and enters this week's action needing just two rebounds to become Goldey-Beacom's all-time rebounding leader. The Lightning, who allowed a season-low 41 points against Chestnut Hill, will play a pair of games this week beginning with a road contest against CACC South Division rival Philadelphia University on Wednesday night and a home game against Post University on Saturday afternoon.
GEORGIAN COURT – Despite a 33-27 halftime deficit and a game-high 31 points from Wilmington University freshman Tenicia Spence (Baltimore, Md.), defeat was not on the menu for the Lions as the Georgian Court University basketball squad surmounted a second stanza comeback and outlasted the visiting Wildcats, 68-65, Tuesday night at the GCU Wellness Center. Brittany Baker (Jr., Waldorf, Md.) provided her second double-double of the year for GCU as the junior snared a game-high 15 boards while draining 11 points. Shauneia McPhearson (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) deposited 13 points of her own while Jasmine Cobbs (Jr., Elmont, N.Y.) scored a season-high of 10 points. Tahira Matthews (So., Bloomfield, N.J.) ripped down 10 boards and scored seven points. Elizabeth Lawler (Jr., Forked River, N.J.) provided three blocks to go along with eight boards and seven points. The Lions travel to University of the Sciences Wednesday before concluding the week with a Saturday home game vs. Nyack.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family picked up its third straight win after defeating USciences, 60-56, this past Tuesday in the team's lone game of the week. Holy Family, ranked 14th in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, has won 15 of its last 16 games. Senior Erin Mann recorded her seventh double-double of the season after scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds versus the Devils. PHILADELPHIA – The Rams (9-6, 5-3 CACC) won their only game of the week with a 66-44 triumph over visiting Washington Adventist on Jan. 20. Sophomore guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa.) drilled five three-pointers on her way to a career-high 19 points. Freshman forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) had 11 points and 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double this season. Arnao is ninth in Division II in rebounding. This week, Philadelphia hosts Goldey-Beacom on Jan. 23 and Caldwell on Jan. 26.
POST - Junior Aubrey Latham became the fifth player in Post University women's basketball history to score 1,000 points in her career. She netted a game-high 21 points at Concordia on Tuesday night as the Eagles dropped an 84-70 decision on the road. The loss dropped Post to 8-9 overall and 7-4 in the CACC.
WILMINGTON - Wilmington had two opportunities in the final minute of play to tie the game with Georgian Court, but the Lions held on for a 68-65 victory in the Wildcats only game last week. Freshman guard Tenicia Spence shot 11-for-23 from the floor and added 8-of-11 from the foul line for the 31 points in the contest. Spence set a new career high with 31 points, tying for the tenth most points in a single contest in program history. Senior Danielle Thomas was the last Wildcat to score 30 or more points, tallying 32 against Cheyney on November 17, 2010. But it was Thomas' game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds left that was off the mark in the only contest this week. Lauren Brown also added 12 points in the loss. Wilmington heads to Concordia on Saturday in their only matchup this week.
USCIENCES – The Devils played just one game last week, narrowly losing at nationally ranked Holy Family University 60-56. Becca Ruggear tied her season-high in rebounds and recorded her team-leading fifth double-double in the contest with 11 points and 14 boards. Sophomore guard Brianne Traub, led the Devils with 18 points. Ruggear's 14-rebound performance moved her into 16th place on the Devils all-time rebound list with 498 for her career. The Devils have two games this week, hosting Georgian Court on Wednesday, January 23 and Felician on Saturday, January 26.
