HOLY FAMILY SET TO HOST NCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
PHILADELPHIA, PA - For the second consecutive year, Holy Family University will be the host institution for the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball East Region Tournament. The Tigers earned the second seed for the tournament when the selections were released by the NCAA on Sunday night. Furthermore, Philadelphia University claimed the No. 8 seed after winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Saturday evening.
Holy Family earned a NCAA
Tournament appearance for the sixth consecutive season
after
earning an at-large bid into the 64-team field. The Tigers enter
play with a 25-5 overall record. Holy Family claimed the CACC South
Division crown for the second consecutive year after posting an
18-0 mark. The Tigers were eliminated from the conference
tournament in the opening round.
Holy Family will take on Queens (N.Y.) College, the region's
seventh seed, in the first round. The Lady Knights (24-6) won the
East Coast Conference to make their first ever NCAA Tournament
appearance.
Philadelphia garnered the eight seed after winning the CACC Tournament Championship over Wilmington University Saturday evening. The Lady Rams also upended USP and Bloomfield en route to the title. Philadelphia enters the tournament with a 21-9 overall record after going 13-5 in the CACC in the regular-season. The squad will face the region's top seed, Franklin Pierce University (24-5) in the opening round. The Ravens won the the Northeast-10 Tournament Championship on Saturday. Last year, the Ravens won the 2008 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional Tournament over Holy Family in Philadelphia.
The third seed is Stonehill (20-8) out of the Northeast-10. The
Skyhawks got an at-large bid after reaching the second round of the
conference tournament. The College of St. Rose (20-10) gets the
sixth seed. The Golden Knights advanced to the semi-finals of the
Northeast-10 tournament. The final match-up is fourth-seeded
Bentley (21-11) and fifth-seeded American International (20-12).
Bentley was the runner-up in the Northeast-10, while American
International was a semi-finalist in the same tournament.
The opening round will take place on Friday, March 13. The
semi-finals are on Saturday, March 14, while the final is on
Monday, March 16. Game-times will be announced on Monday, March
9.
The winner of the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament advances
to the Elite Eight in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, March 24 until
Friday, March 29.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $3 for
students with valid ID.
