NEW HAVEN, CT - Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Tournament MVP, Russell Frederick, has been named the CACC Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 8. Bloomfield's Robert Young was tabbed Rookie of the Week after helping his team reach the CACC Championship game.
Frederick, a junior point guard from Baltimore, MD, helped Philadelphia University capture its second straight CACC Tournament championship with a victory over Bloomfield on Saturday evening. In three tournament games, Frederick averaged 16.0 points, 4.7 assists and 4.0 rebounds per-game while shooting 51.8-percent (14-for-27) from the field and 42.9-percent (6-for-14) from beyond the arc. He was also named MVP of the CACC Tournament last season.
Young, a 6-4 freshman forward from the Bronx, NY, helped lead Bloomfield to the CACC Championship game by averaging 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per-game in three contests. He shot nearly 50-percent from the field (14-29) and added 1.33 steals per-game. For his efforts, he was named to the CACC All-Tournament team.
Honorable Mention
Gage Daye, Bloomfield (So., G, 6-2, Newark, NJ) - Averaged 24.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals per-game in three CACC Tournament contests.
Kyle White, Goldey-Beacom (Jr., G, 5-10, Georgetown, DE) - Averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per-game in two CACC Tourney games.
Manny Perez, Caldwell (Sr., F, 6-7, Egg Harbor Twp., NJ) - Tallied 22 points, eight rebounds and three assists against Bloomfield on Tuesday.
CACC Notes
Caldwell - Senior forward Manny Perez finished his career with 1,859 points to rank second on Caldwell's all-time scoring list. He holds the school record for free throws made (567) and ranks third in field goals (639).
Felician - Felician completes the season with a six-win improvement over 2007-08, and with the second-highest victory total in program history.
Holy Family - Holy Family's season came to a close after a 70-56
loss to Goldey-Beacom in the opening round of the CACC Championship
Tournament. Freshman forward Jusin Swidowski led the Tigers attack
26 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Ceazer Johnson recorded
16 points, nine rebounds and four assists in his final collegiate
game. Holy Family ends the season at 8-20 overall and qualified
third in the south for the conference tournament with a 7-9 CACC
mark. Swidowski, the CACC Rookie of the Year, led the team in
scoring (16.1 points per game), rebounding (8.0 per game), shooting
percentage (.551) and free throw percentage (.756). Johnson, an
All-CACC second team pick, was second in scoring (15.9) and
rebounding (7.8.). Senior guard Quincy Marshall earned All-CACC
honorable mention. He dished out a team-high 134 assists.
