Garret Kerr Named to Daktronics Men’s Basketball All-American Team
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - University of the Sciences men's basketball player Garret Kerr has been named to the 2012-13 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Basketball All-American Team that was announced today. The Daktronics All-American Teams are selected by NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors from institutions and conference offices throughout the nation. Kerr was chosen as a second team honoree.
Kerr (Middle Township HS/Moorestown, N.J.) holds the distinction of being the only non-senior selected to either the first, second or third team. He is the Devils first player named as an All-American in their NCAA era and the first player overall since Jason Wood earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American status after the 2000-2001 season. Kerr is also the first player from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference to be named to the Daktronics All-American team since Gage Daye was a first team honoree in 2010-11.
The sophomore forward led the Devils to a 13-13 record and a berth in the CACC playoffs. A native of Moorestown, NJ, Kerr proved to be an iron man, averaging 39.4 minutes per game. He made good use of those minutes, averaging 21.1 ppg., 19th in Division II, and a Division II-high 12.4 rpg., along with 67 assists, 37 steals and 11 blocks. Kerr shot 52.0 percent from the floor, with 25 3-pointers in 51 attempts, along with 78.9 percent from the line. As a freshman he was the CACC Rookie of the Year, making him the first men's basketball player in conference history to earn both awards during their career.
Kerr led the CACC in both scoring and rebounding, becoming just the second player to do so in the conference's NCAA era, joining Lataiva Escho of Nyack who accomplished the feat in 2004-05. His scoring and rebound totals are also best amongst all players in the Division II East Region.
Garret reached double figures in scoring in 25 of the Devils 26 games, including the last 21 and recorded six games of 30+ points during the season, including a career-high 34 against Bloomfield College on February 16, 2013. He recorded double-doubles in 13 of the Devils 17 CACC games this season, with eight games of 15 or more rebounds, including a 21-rebound game against Chestnut Hill on February 12, 2013 and a career-high 22-rebound effort against the same Chestnut Hill squad 11 days later on February 23, 2013. His 22 rebounds against the Griffins equals the highest total in a single game by any NCAA Division II player this season.
The former Middle Township High School Athlete is in his second season of play for the Devils. Garret is a physical therapy major at the University of the Sciences.
