Devil’s Kerr Earns Philly Small College Coaches Association Player of the Week
New Haven, Conn. (December 5, 2012) - University of the Sciences men's basketball player Garret Kerr (Moorestown, N.J.) has was honored as the Sam Cozen Player of the Week by The Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association at the luncheon on Tuesday at the University of the Sciences.
Now in its 26th season, the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association honors area small college basketball players at their bi-weekly luncheons, not only for the performance on the court, but for their leadership and their academic success, ideals emphasized by the late Sam Cozen, longtime coach at Drexel University and for whom the award is named.
Kerr has been the Devils leading scorer and rebounder in their nine games this season as the Devils have compiled a 3-6 overall record. The sophomore forward is averaging 17.6 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game.
In three games last week, Kerr averaged 20.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in leading the Devils to a 2-1 record and two straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) wins.
It was against the Devils two conference foes that Kerr turned in his best performances of the young season last week. Against Wilmington University, the sophomore scored a season-high 29 points while grabbing eight rebounds as the Devils hung on for a 78-76 win over the Wildcats. Garret connected on 13 of 18 shots (72.2%) from the field in the winning effort. He followed up that performance with a 22-point, 15-rebound game at Nyack College, adding six assists and three steals in the 73-52 victory.
For the week, Kerr shot 65% (26-40) from the field and averaged 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals.
The former Middle Township High School Athlete is in his second season of play for the Devils. As a freshman, Kerr led the Devils in scoring and rebounding. In addition he was the leading rebounder in all of NCAA Division II. Kerr earned CACC Rookie of the week honors a record eight times en route to becoming the CACC Rookie of the Year.
