Wilmington Repeats as CACC Men's Cross Country Champions; Nyack Wins Women's Championship

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Wilmington University’s men’s cross country team repeated as Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Champions, while Nyack College claimed the women’s championship today at legendary Belmont Plateau hosted by Philadelphia University.
The men’s race was contested first and featured a dominating performance from the Wildcats (15 points) who claimed all five top positions as well as seven of the top-15. Junior Richie Mitten tripped the finish line with a winning time of 26:43, followed closely by teammate sophomore Jesus Amezquita, junior Tyler Muse, senior Mike O’Brian and freshman Ken Fontal. Based on their finishes, Mitten was tabbed 2013 CACC Runner of the Year and Fontal was named the 2013 Rookie of the Year.
Rounding out the top-10 for the men were junior Eric Lacey (6th), junior Curran Kneebone (7th) and Tim Malloy (9th) of Philadelphia University; Keenan Huggins (8th) of Felician College and Marshall Hawkins of Wilmington (10th).
Wildcat mentor Keith Jones was honored as Coach of the Year and Bloomfield College earned the Rob Roman Memorial Team Sportsmanship Award. The Top XIV winner went to senior Jabari Chambers of Goldey-Beacom College with his cumulative 3.8 grade point average, the highest GPA amongst the active runners in the championship.
The women’s race would prove to be a battle to the finish between the victorious Warriors and host Philadelphia University. Nyack claimed the 2013 Championship with 32 points to the Rams 39 points. Sophomore Brianna Ligotski of the University of the Sciences won the individual championship with a time of 19:36 and was named Runner of the Year.
Nyack would place all five runners in the top ten, while Philadelphia U. placed three. The Warriors were paced by sophomore Rebecca Wakeley (2nd), sophomore Nicole Pagan (6th), freshman Sara-Caitrin Mandelburg (7th), freshman Tricia Frazer (8th) and Danielle Wilson (9th). Philadelphia would be paced by junior Taylor Falvey (3rd), sophomore Alyssa Litty (4th) and freshman Jessica Thies (5th). Thies was honored as the CACC Rookie of the Year with her fifth place finish. The final top-10 runner was junior Jeanette Halliburton of Wilmington with her 10th place effort.
Philadelphia U. mentor Dave Thomas was tabbed as Coach of the
Year and the University of the Sciences was honored with the Anne
Jackson Memorial Team Sportsmanship Award. The Top XIV Award
winner was Philadelphia U.’s Taylor Falvey with a 3.85 grade
point average, which is the highest amongst the competitors in the
women’s meet. The awards were presented by CACC Commissioner
Daniel Mara of Waterbury.
