MIDDLEBURY, Conn. (October 26, 2019) -- Top-seeded Concordia College got strong performances by a handful of players on Saturday to complete a 4-0 triumph over second-seeded Goldey-Beacom College in the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Championship Final at Edgewood Bath & Tennis Club in Middlebury, Conn. The Clippers swept the 2019 CACC Championships in women's tennis, as they claimed the regular season crown with a perfect 9-0 league record, and then locked up the post-season title with a solid showing on Saturday.
The Clippers improved to 13-0 overall and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Divison II East Region Tournament, which will be held at a site to be determined in late April. G-B fell to 9-2 on the season. It marked the second in less than two full weeks that Concordia defeated the Lightning, as it also turned the trick with a 4-3 victory in Delaware back on Oct. 13.
Concordia was making its second-consecutive appearance in the CACC final, as the Clippers came up just short against Wilmington University in 2018. However, the Clippers reversed course this season and raised the CACC trophy in the program's third season since returning to varsity status in the 2017 campaign.
Concordia's Ann Kathrin Wirlitsch was named the most valuable player of the championship, as she went 2-0 in singles action during the semis and final. She also teamed with Alexandra Dumitrescu at No. 3 doubles, and the duo posted a 6-0 win to get the day started as Concordia nabbed the doubles point heading into singles action.
Josefina Torres Martin won in straight-sets at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-2), as her victory clinched the fourth and final point Concordia needed to set off a championship celebration.
