USciences' Karla Miletic Named 2016 CACC Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Year
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 17, 2016) -- University of the Sciences' freshman standout Karla Miletic on Monday swept the two major awards in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis, as she was named the 2016 player and rookie of the year, respectively, as announced by Commissioner Daniel B. Mara. In addition to her two major honors, Miletic also garnered a spot on the All-CACC First Team.
Joining Miletic as a year-end major award winner was Wilmington University head coach Brad Rose, who was named the 2016 BSN Sports CACC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for doing an amazing job of guiding the Wildcats to the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference championship tournament in the program's inaugural season of the sport at the varsity level.
Miletic has had a strong debut season for the Devils. She went 14-0 during the regular season, playing in the No. 1 spot for head coach James Brennan's team. She also produced eight wins in doubles competition with various partners.
Miletic was named the CACC Rookie of the Week three times this season, which was the most by any rookie in the league. Miletic becomes the first student-athlete since Concordia College's Costanza Mecchi in 2013 to sweep the player and rookie-of-the-year honors.
For Rose, he was named the new head coach of the Wildcats program in the spring and did not have too much time to recruit before the 2016 fall season. However, he did a wonderful job putting together a roster of young and energetic players that pushed WilmU to terrific heights as a first-year program. Wilmington went 7-3 overall during the regular season and 6-1 in league play.
The other major award announced on Monday was Caldwell University being named the 2016 CACC Women's Tennis Team Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the regular season.
Joining Miletic on the All-CACC First Team was Liza Dubrovskaya (Post University), Begona Gomar (Wilmington), Anna Hortelano Pey (Goldey-Beacom College), Laure-Anne Josso (Chestnut Hill College) and Anastasiya Kolodiy (Holy Family University). Dubrovskaya and Josso were named to the all-conference first team for the second year in a row.
Six student-athletes were placed on the All-CACC Second Team with five of those coming from Goldey-Beacom including Francesca Beg, Alma Garcia Valle, Silvia Hortelano Pey, Lea Schmuecker and Nina Sengl. The sixth member of the second team was WilmU's Laura Gil.
Each of the honorees will be recognized on Friday night at the 2016 CACC Women's Tennis Championship Banquet, which will be staged at Chestnut Hill. CHC is serving once again as the host for the women's tennis championship.
The 2016 CACC Championship kicks off Tuesday with a first-round matchup between fourth-seeded USciences and fifth-seeded Philadelphia University at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will head to championship weekend at Chestnut Hill with Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's final. The USciences-PhilaU will face top-seeded and regular season champion Goldey-Beacom in the semis on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by second-seeded WilmU facing third-seed Post at 1 p.m. Saturday's two winners will face off in the championship final on Sunday at 1 p.m.
