CACC Announces Women's Tennis All-Conference and Major Award Winners
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Concordia College freshman Costanza Mecchi (Rome, Italy) has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Year as voted on by the conference coaches and announced today by Commissioner Dan Mara. Chestnut Hill College's Albert Stroble was tabbed as Coach of the Year and Caldwell College garnered the Team Sportsmanship Award. The coach of the year award was voted on by the conference sports information directors.
Mecchi is undefeated in both singles and doubles contests during her first year of competition. To date, the number one Clipper has surrendered a total of 14 games en route to not dropping a singles set in 2013. Mecchi has teamed up with fellow freshman Stefanie Canals-Baker (Pollensa, Islas Baleares, Spain) to post a 7-0 mark in doubles play. Her signature win so far this season was a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over the two-time defending CACC Player of the Year and the then third-ranked player in the East Region, Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Botoga, Columbia) of Goldey-Beacom College. Mecchi reached the semifinals of the "A" draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region singles championships. She was ranked #6 in the draw and defeated the #4-ranked entry before falling in the semifinals to the eventual singles champion.
Stroble guided the Griffins of Chestnut Hill to a perfect 8-0 mark in CACC play during the 2013 campaign. This latest honor is the third (2010-11, 2011-12) for Stroble during his tenure. He picked up his 100th-career win on September 17, 2013 with the 5-4 victory over Concordia College, which was the first loss for the Clippers in conference play during its time as a CACC member (2009). Stroble had amassed 30 victories as the mentor at Holy Family University.
Joining Mecchi and Puentes Robinson as members of the CACC All-Conference First Team are junior Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Tex.) and sophomore Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) of Chestnut Hill; junior Linda Eliasson (Gothenburg, Sweden) of Concordia; and freshman Anastasiya Kolodiy (Lviv, Ukraine) of Holy Family University.
The CACC All-Conference Second Team is comprised of Canals-Baker of Concordia; freshman Emerald Adams (White Plains, Md.) of Holy Family; senior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) and freshman Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) of Goldey-Beacom; freshman Marie Deleval (Grimaud, France) of Chestnut Hill; and sophomore Victoria Quang (Forest Hills, Md.) of the University of the Sciences.
Named honorable mention were freshman Maria Angeles Victoria Martinez (Totana, Spain) and junior Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) of Goldey-Beacom; and sophomore Alina Nersesyan (Yaroslavi, Russia) of Holy Family University.
A new award presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average at the championship site is the CACC Top XIV Award. This year's recipient from Concordia is sophomore Nicole Stuhr who has amassed a cumulative 4.0 grade point average in Biology.
