Oct 18, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, PA--Daniela Rodriguez of Philadelphia University won the singles championship and Holy Family University's Shakir Willett and Quena Borres won the doubles competition as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Individual Tournament concluded today at Chestnut Hill College. As a result of her victory, Rodriguez was named the CACC Player of the Year. Philadelphia's Christina Brzozowski was named the CACC Rookie of the Year, while Goldey-Beacom College head coach Joe Kissel was voted Coach of the Year. USP won the annual Team Sportsmanship Award.

After a day that saw every top seed advance, the second and final day of the tournament featured nothing but upsets. Willett and Borres, the No. 2 seed in doubles, started the day by upsetting the top seeded team of Daniela Rodriguez and Adriana Rodriguez, 8-4, to claim the doubles title.

The semifinals of the singles draw commenced with Daniela Rodriguez, the No. 4 seed, upending the top seed, Luisiana Souto of Goldey-Beacom, 6-2, 6-4. Fresh off her victory in doubles, third seeded Willett kept her momentum and got past No. 2 Adriana Rodriguez, 7-5, 6-4, setting up a championship match against Daniela Rodriguez. Rodriguez opened with an impressive 6-0 victory in the first set, but Willet, a senior, answered by taking the second set, 6-2. Rodriguez, just a sophomore, took control of the third and final set to take the championship with a 6-2 triumph.
