HOLY FAMILY STUNS PHILADELPHIA FOR CACC WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Nov. 5, 2011) - The Holy Family University women's soccer team stunned top-seeded Philadelphia University, 1-0, to claim the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Saturday afternoon at Victory Field on the campus of Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School.
Holy Family, seeded sixth in this year's championship, improves to 13-7-0 overall and has
won six straight contests, including nine of its last ten. With the victory over Philadelphia, Holy Family received the CACC's automatic qualifying bid into next week's NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. Philadelphia falls to 16-3-2 on the season.
Senior Dawn Curry scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute of action after heading the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick attempt by senior Lindsay Fisher. Curry received the ball right in front of the net to knock in her 14th goal of the season, which marks a new career-high.
Curry was named the championship's Most Valuable Player for her performance throughout the championship. Fisher, juniors Melissa Benson, Kathryn Helkowski and Megan Tole were also named to the All-Tournament team from Holy Family.
Holy Family led 1-0 with less than 25 minutes remaining in regulation and held Philadelphia to only four shots in that span to hold on to the one goal victory. Senior Gina Mansi made three saves in net as she recorded her third shutout of the season for the Tigers.
This marks Holy Family's fourth CACC Championship title under head coach Mike Biddle as the Tigers have won the conference championship in 2005, 2007, 2009 and now in 2011. As a result, Holy Family will be making its third ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2009.
Holy Family will find out its opponent at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7 when the NCAA announces this year's tournament field. Fans can watch the women's soccer selection show live on-line at www.ncaa.com.
