LAKEWOOD, N.J. (April 30, 2017) -- Amber Neumann made 16 saves and Samantha Fernandez threw in five goals to lead top-seeded Georgian Court University to a 16-8 win over third-seeded Philadelphia University on Sunday in the 2017 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Lacrosse Championship at the GCU Turf Field in Lakewood, N.J.
Both Neumann and Fernandez were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts, while the former was also named the most valuable player of the championship. GCU capped its season with a 13-6 record, while the Rams finished at 10-8.
Georgian Court exploded for 10 goals in the second half to open up a slim 6-5 lead at halftime into a comfortable eight-goal margin for the final score. After PhilaU tied it at 6-all in the opening two minutes of the second half, the Lions rallied by scoring five of the next six goals to open up an 11-7 lead with 15:51 to go. Fernandez scored the final three goals of the surge to cap the strong sequence for Georgian Court.
Courtney Shaw answered with a goal for PhilaU, but the Lions wrapped up the contest and the championship by scoring the final five goals. Xena Valenzuela and Taylor Bauerband followed Fernandez with three goals apiece. Fernandez had an assist for a six-point day, while Valenzuela chipped in with a pair of assists to complete a five-point afternoon.
The Rams tried to respond late, but each time Neumann was more than up to the challenge of making the stop. She made several saves both high and low, as Philadelphia had trouble solving her all afternoon.
Isabella DiGnazio led Philadelphia with four goals, while Shaw had a pair on eight shots taken. The Rams outshot GCU 33-29.
