Callahan Repeats As Coach of Year; NJIT Wins Team Sportsmanship Award

NEWARK, N.J. - Hasani Whitfield of Caldwell College was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Year and Wilmington (Del.) College's Pete Henyan earned Pitcher of the Year honors in balloting released today. Caldwell's Eric Hines and Joe Kubanik of Dominican (N.Y.) College share the Newcomer of the Year award, and Brian Callahan of New Jersey Institute of Technology was voted Coach of the Year by his peers. The balloting was done by the league's nine head coaches.

Whitfield, a senior outfielder from Jamaica, N.Y., entered the week fifth in the CACC in hitting at .366 with six homeruns and 30 runs batted in in 36 games. He is third in the league in total bases and fourth in slugging percentage (.595), and also has 10 doubles and 15 stolen bases.

Henyan earns his second consecutive Pitcher of the Year Award after finishing the regular season 6-1 with a 2.64 earned-run average and 77 strikeouts. The senior right-hander from Corning, N.Y., leads the conference in wins, strikeouts, and opponent batting average (.225), and is among national leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (11.95). He is also eighth in the CACC in hitting.

Hines, of Millstown, N.J., is the the only CACC pitcher this season to have thrown three shutouts. He is 5-2 and ranks fourth in the league with a 2.74 ERA. Kubanik, a third-baseman from Stony Point, N.Y., entered the week hitting .362 with 11 doubles, a homer, and a league-leading 36 RBI.

Callahan, a repeat selection for Coach of the Year, guided the Highlanders (20-16) to the CACC regular-season crown with an 18-6 league mark. NJIT, the top seed in this week's conference tournament, will finish with its best winning percentage in more than a decade.
