CACC Softball All-Conference Teams Announced
LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Caldwell College sophomore catcher Alyssa Calderon has been named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Player of the Year after a vote of the 14 conference coaches. Senior Katie Warrington of Wilmington University was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year, freshman first baseman Kimberly Ragazzo earned Rookie of the Year, Caldwell mentor Dean Johnson garnered Coach of the Year honors and Nyack College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award. The awards and all-conference team members were announced at tonight's annual championship banquet at Georgian Court University.
Calderon followed up her second team all-conference selection her freshman year with a monster sophomore campaign. The native of Fontana, California posted a .386 batting average (10th in the CACC), seven homeruns (2nd), 38 RBI (4th), 15 doubles (6th), 97 total bases (3rd) and a .634 on-base percentage (4th). Calderon did most of her damage in the conference as she recorded a .417 batting average (9th), five homeruns (3rd) and 26 RBI (6th). March 26 and 27 were productive days for the sophomore as she hit two homeruns against Bloomfield and two more against Felician the following day. Her efforts were rewarded as the CACC Player of the Week.
Warrington, 2012 CACC First Team All-Conference performer, dominated the circle in 2013. The senior from Townsend, Delaware, led the conference with 216 strikeouts, .161 opponent's batting average, 7 shutouts and a 0.90 earned run average. Warrington's final shutout of the regular season was a memorable one as she threw a no-hitter against Concordia College. She was one walk away from a perfect game and added 11 strikeouts. She was named the CACC Pitcher of the Week four times (3/5, 4/8, 4/22 and 4/29) and the CACC Student-Athlete of the Month in March.
Ragazzo enjoyed a breakout season for the Chargers as she outpaced the conference in slugging percentage (.703), total bases (109), runs batted in (51), home runs (12) and runs scored (46). The native of Lawrenceville, N.J. was third in the conference in walks (19) and ninth in batting average (.387), hits (90) and doubles (13). In league play, Ragazzo hit .453 (5th) with a .860 slugging percentage (2nd), 9 homeruns (1st) and 36 RBI (1st).
Johnson repeats as the conference's top coach after leading the Cougars to a 39-10 overall record and a second place 23-3 mark in the CACC. In his 19th season at the helm of the Caldwell program, he has earned his seventh league coach of the year honor. The Cougars are in search of their ninth NCAA tournament appearance in the past ten years. In the latest NCAA East Regional poll, Caldwell is ranked second with a 30-4 in-region record.
