Softball Team Plays First Regular Season Contests In New Home But Drops Both Games To Wilmington (Del.)
Team Will Now Open ECC Play At STAC On Tuesday
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team played its first regular season games on its beautiful new field in Seaside Park on Friday afternoon, but unfortunately for Purple Knights' fans, it was a tough day for the home as UB fell twice to the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington (Del.) University, 11-5 in game one and 5-1 in game two, in a game that was called due to darkness after five innings. UB is now 5-11 on the season, and Wilmington raises its record to 7-11.
In the opener, Bridgeport lead 5-1 after three innings, but the Wildcats scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a lead which they would not relinquish.
In game one, junior Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, California) blasted a home run going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in. Senior Mallory Streat (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Jessica Griesinger (Brewster, N.Y.) also had two hits apiece for Bridgeport in the opener.
In the nightcap, Phillips knocked in her team's only run, and junior Jade Blair (West Deptford, N.J.) had two hits.
Up next for the UB softball team is a trip to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, March 25 to open the 2014 East Coast Conference schedule. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
