CLERMONT, Fla. - - Seniors Jillian Stafford, Brooke Berger and Katie Warrington all had big days in leading the Wilmington University softball team to sweep of Friday, first defeating No. 17 West Virginia Wesleyan, 6-5, before taking down Felician, 6-0, in a nonconference battle at the National Training Center.

Stafford pitched and hit her way through West Virginia Wesleyan (5-2), ranked No. 17 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll, knocking in three runs while throwing a complete game in picking up her second win of the season.

The Wildcats grabbed the lead for good with a three run fifth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Berger started the rally with a double to left field. Stafford followed with an RBI single to left field to make it 4-3. West Virginia Wesleyan helped keep the inning alive by committing one of its five errors for the game and Skye Boris loaded the bases with a walk. Freshman Rice Fazio made it 6-3 with a two run double to right center to cap the scoring for the Wildcats.

Stafford allowed a single in each inning from the third frame on, but never gave up the big inning to keep the Wildcats in front. Leading by two runs heading into the seventh Rebekah Honce hit a two-out run scoring double, putting the tying run on second. But Stafford induced a game ending comebacker to the circle, give the Wildcats' its first victory over a ranked opponent in program history.

Game two was all about pitching, as Warrington struck out 17 of a possible 21 batters to move to 3-0 on the young season. Freshmen Brook Ash and Cambria Ziemba, and senior Shelby Thompson led the offense by collecting two hits each while Berger cleared the bases with a double in the fifth to finish the game with a team high three RBI's.

Warrington's 17 strikeouts were the second most in a game by a Wildcat, trailing her own program record of 20 strikeouts in a single contest. She only gave up three hits on the afternoon.

The 6-2 start to the season is the best record the Wildcats have produced since the 2008 team started 6-2 in its first eight games before jumping out to a 13-3 record. The Wildcats face Cedarville and Stonehill on Saturday continuing its two week Spring Break trip to Florida.
