No. 23 Millersville Too Much For Wilmington Baseball in 9-1 Defeat

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - A six-run seventh inning propelled nationally No. 23 Millersville past the Wilmington University baseball team, 9-1, in a nonconference contest at Cooper Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats (25-15) scored the first run of the game but the Marauders (27-14) answered to take a 3-1 lead after the fourth. They put the Wildcats away in the bottom of the seventh, as they scored six runs to extend their lead to 9-1.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the top of the first as Julian Kurych got things started with a one out double to left center. Nick Macey hit an infield single to put runners on the corners with two outs and Mike Annone singled through the right side for the 1-0 lead.

Starter Zach Rumford stranded a leadoff double at second base in the second, but the Marauders came through with a two-out RBI single in the third to tie the game, 1-1. Eric Callahan then put the home team ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a two-out two-run homer to left for the 3-1 lead.

Millersville put the game away with six runs on six hits in the seventh inning, starting with a leadoff walk and an RBI double. Another two-run double put the Marauders up 8-1 before they tacked on a final run in the inning with a two-out single.

Macey led the Wildcats by going 3-for-4 on the day while Regan Hidalgo batted 2-for-3 with a double. Dan Haytt also went 2-for-3 in the contest. Rumford fell to 3-3 on the season with the loss.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday as they travel to Philadelphia to play a nonconference doubleheader at USciences. The first pitch against the Devils is slated for 1:00 p.m.
