BOCA RATON, Fla. - - A trio of big innings spurred the 15th ranked Southern New Hampshire baseball team over Wilmington University, 11-4, on the Wildcats' first day of their Spring Break Trip to South Florida on Monday afternoon on the campus of Lynn University.

Josh Hampton remained scorching hot at the plate for the Wildcats (5-3), hitting three more doubles while going 3-for-4 with an RBI on Monday afternoon, but the pitching and defense gave up 15 free bases on walks, hit batters and errors, allowing the Penmen (7-0) to score five runs in the second, three in the fifth and three more in the eighth for the win.

The Wildcats got on the board first in the game, playing the name of the game in the second inning. Hampton started the rally with a double down the left field line and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jonathan Rodriguez. With one out, Joe Marciano ground out to second base, allowing Hampton to score for the 1-0 lead.

But the Penmen fired back in the bottom of the second, putting a five spot on the board with all the damage coming with two outs in the inning. Southern New Hampshire, ranked tied for 15th in the February 25 NCBWA Poll, added three more runs in the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs.

Wilmington attempted to make it a game in the top of the six inning, getting the three runs back to cut the deficit to four with nine outs remaining. With runners on first and second, Hampton connected on his second double of the afternoon to left center, scoring Kyle Lindstrom from second. Two batters later, Joe Marciano singled into left center field to allow both runners to trot home and cut the deficit to 8-4.

The Wildcats threatened again in the seventh inning putting two runners on with only one out. The Penmen's reliever Stephen Fortuna battled with Lindstrom and Frank Samluk, needing nine pitches on each batter before finally striking them out to end the threat, unscathed. The Wildcats again threatened in the eighth as Hampton doubled inside the third base bag to start the inning, but was later left stranded at third as the game remained 8-4.

After escaping the two threats, the Penmen added three runs in the eighth inning to pad their lead and all but putting the game away.

Jason Seiltler went the first four innings for the Wildcats, striking out two but walking three batters, giving up eight runs (six earned) in the loss. Southern New Hampshire's Jon Massad went the first six innings for the Penmen, striking out four while giving up four runs on five hits, moving to 2-0 on the season.

Peter Monahan dominated from the mound once again for the Wildcats, striking out all five batters he faced in 2.1 innings of work, moving his strikeout total to a team high 12 in only 5.2 innings on the season.

The team will get right back to action on Tuesday, as it heads to Barry University for its first night game of the 2013 season. Barry, ranked No. 10 in the latest NCBWA South Region Poll, is 12-7 overall and winners of three straight. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Miami Shores, Fla.
