CLERMONT, Fla. - - The Wilmington University softball team suffered a pair of 2-0 losses to national ranked teams on Saturday, as No. 20 Grand Valley State and No. 25 Shippensburg narrowly escaped with victories at the National Training Center on the second day of the team's Florida Trip.

Single runs in the first and fifth innings allowed Grand Valley State (11-4) to sneak away with the 2-0 victory before Shippensburg (4-0) scored twice in the top of the seventh to steal a 2-0 win from the Wildcats (2-4).

The Lakers got to senior starter Stephanie Sarris in the bottom of the first on a pair of hits, as Grand Valley State used a double and an ensuing single to score the first run of the contest.

The Wildcats got their first hit of the game in the fourth inning as Meghan Logullo laid down a bunt with one out in the inning. Now standing on third after a sacrifice but by Miranda Pedersen, Logullo was stranded 60 feet away from home as the inning ended as Ashley Bennett lined out to right field.

Sophomore Jen Fischbach got the Wildcats out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning, inducing a force out at the plate and a groundout to Pedersen at short to not allow the Lakers to score.

Kelsey Doherty hit a single through the right side with one out in the sixth, but was thrown out attempting to steal second. Logullo followed with a single to center, but the rally was cut short as the Lakers got out of the inning unscathed.

Logullo led the Wildcats by going 2-for-3 with Doherty and Fischbach collected to the other two hits for the visitors. After winning her first game as a Wildcat on Friday, Sarris dropped to 1-1 with the loss, giving up one run on two hits.

Fischbach continued her strong pitching performance into the night cap of Saturday's doubleheader against #25 Shippensburg, getting the nod and going all seven innings.

But the Red Raider's starter Emily Estep was up to matching Fischbach pitch for pitch, as Estep only allowed two hits in the complete game shutout.

The Wildcats first hit gave them the best chance to score, as Doherty led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double. But a failed sacrifice opportunity took the wind out of the sails for the Wildcats, as Estep was able to get three straight outs and strand Doherty at second at the end of the inning.

Michelle Panasiti hit a one-out single in the fifth in a scoreless game, and stood on second after Colby Wyatt moved her over on a sacrifice hit. But once again, Estep was able to buckle down for the Red Raiders, stranding Panasiti on second with an inning ending strikeout.

Fischbach was just as strong in the circle for the Wildcats, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth. A play at the plate in the 6th kept the Red Raiders off the board as a relay home from Logullo and Cambria Ziemba gunned down the runner who started the play at second base.

Fischbah would not be so fortunate in the seventh inning as Shippensburg's Briana Giovenco hit a one-out double to left center, easily scoring runners from second and third base for the 2-0 lead. Fischbach got out of the inning with a fly out and a strikeout on the next two batters.

But Estep didn't budge in the bottom of the seventh, as she put the Wildcats down in order to secure the victory.

Wilmington has a quick turnaround as it continues on their annual Florida Trip, playing on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. The Wildcats square off in a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State on Sunday, playing at Hancock Park.
