SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's soccer team won a 2-0 victory over Post University to open the 2022 campaign on Tuesday, August 30.
AIC stands at 1-0-0 on the young season.
The Yellow Jackets were frustrated in the early going as they generated the bulk of the first half's chances, only to be turned back by goalkeeper Imelda Lazaro, who stopped five shots in the opening stanza alone.
However, the pressure mounted until AIC finally broke through. Wilma Jansson's pass eluded the defenses and found Gabby Williams in front of the net, and she tucked home her first of the year – the team's first as well – at 32:33 into the left corner underneath Lazaro.
The second half was a similar story. The Yellow Jackets controlled play, but only hit the net once, near the end of the game. Jocelyn Trajkovski took a free kick from about 25 yards out and fired home her first of the season at 85:14, ending any hopes of Post stealing a point.
After the game, Williams noted, "We're a fresh team with a fresh coach, and I think for our first game, we did pretty well."
Olivia Sousa made some stellar reads in net, including punching out a dangerous cross on a corner, but officially was not credited with any saves; nevertheless, she improves to 1-0-0 with one shutout. Lazaro stopped nine bids total in the defeat.
AIC returns to action at home on Friday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. for a nonconference matchup against Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption University.
