NORRISTOWN, Pa. - - Jordan Oncay hit the go-ahead triple in the ninth then came onto the mound for and picked up the save as the Wilmington University baseball team picked up a back-and-forth nonconference game with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill on Thursday afternoon at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Oncay broke through with a triple into the left-center field gap, scoring all three runs to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth. Oncay then came on and got out of his own bases loaded, two out jam to pick up his third save of the season.

One of the keys to baseball is to shut down the opposition the following half-inning after putting runs on the board and Wilmington (9-4) ruined every mini-run Chestnut Hill (7-7) came up with throughout the game. After the Griffins took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats tallied a run in the top of the second. Once Chestnut Hill broke out for four runs in the fourth, Wilmington responded with its own four spot in the top of the fifth.

Wilmington had the last laugh however, after the Griffins scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, the Wildcats retaliated with Oncay's three-run triple to take the non-conference tune-up.

Pinch hitter Joe El-Bisi was hit on a 1-0 pitch to lead off the top of the ninth. Brendan Fallers laid down a sacrifice bunt down the third base line, and Jordan Johnson followed with another sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, putting pinch runner Jonathan Rodriguez on third with two outs.

Joe Harbach worked a five-pitch walk to keep the inning alive, while Mike Godwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Down in the count, Oncay smacked his first triple of the year to left-center field, chasing all three runners home.

Oncay went right to the mound to put a cap on the game, but ran into a bases-loaded jam himself. He quickly struck the first two batters out of the inning but an 11 pitch at-bat to Tim DiMonte resulted in a walk to keep the inning alive. Back-to-back singled loaded the bases for the Griffins, but Oncay buckled down and induced a ground ball to second base to end the game.

Nick Marics gave up the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but picked up the victory and moved to 2-0 as the Wildcats scored three runs for him in the next half inning. Godwin started the game on the hill, throwing the first five innings while allowing five runs (two earned) on 10 hits. He struck out six Griffins on the afternoon while only allowing one walk.

The Wildcats used 14 more hits this afternoon, led by Jow Harbach's 4-for-5 day. Jordan Johnson, Kyle Hitchens and Adam Soley each added two hits, while Oncay led all hitters with four RBI's. Johnson knocked in three runs from the leadoff spot, making it seven RBI's in the past two games.

Anthony McQuade was charged with the loss while giving up the three runs in the ninth inning. Seamus Finnegan started the game for the Griffins, throwing the first two innings and giving up one unearned run on three hits.

The Wildcats start the CACC portion of their schedule this weekend, as they welcome Dominican to Wilson field for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Wilmington will have the target on its back this year, as the Wildcats won the 2011 CACC Tournament and were picked to finish first in the preseason coaches' poll last month.
