Wildcats’ 12 Assists Set New Program Record as #13 Men’s Soccer Defeats Caldwell, 11-0

CALDWELL, N.J. - - The 13th ranked Wilmington University men's soccer team tied a program record on Sunday, scoring 11 goals in an 11-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Caldwell at Kiwanis Oval.

The team also set a new record, dishing out 12 assists on the afternoon in improving its record to 14-2-1 overall and 8-2 inside the CACC.

Freshman Pol Romero led the Wildcats by recording his first career hat trick, scoring on all three shots he took on Sunday. Deshawn Bernard and Shawn Genus scored two goals each while Reinoud van Eijk, Tajhay Williams, Marcus Hedemann, and Hakim Williams chipped in with a goal each in the win.

Freshman Richard Thompson led the way with three assists while nine other Wildcats chipped in with an assist each. Yohan Kim, Carson Talboys, Reinoud van Eijk, Adrian Lekaj, Linus Kagstrom, Marius Skattum Dahl, Colby Niggebrugge, Marcus Hedemann, and Victor Molina all collected assists for the Wildcats.

The scoring didn't start until the 28th minute, but then the Wildcats scored fast and furiously the rest of the first half. Yohan Kim set up Shawn Genus 27:18 into the match and then Shawn Genus buried a rebound off a shot from Richard Thompson in the 31st minute. Pol Romero started his scoring in the 38th minute for the 3-0 lead and then Reinoud van Eijk scored in the 40th minute off a rebound from Richard Thompson. Pol Romero sent the Wildcats into the halftime break with his second goal of the game in the 41st minute.

Hakim Williams got on the board in the 52nd minute before Marcu Hedemann scored off a pass from Marius Skattum Dahl in the 56th minute. Deshawn Bernard scored his first in the 63rd minute off a corner kick and then Pol Romero capped his hat trick with his third goal of the game in the 68th minute. Bernard tacked on his second in the 76th minute before Tajhay William tied the Wildcats program record with the 11th goal of the game in the 88th minute from a pass from Victor Molina.

The last time the Wildcats scored 11 goals in a game was a on October 6, 2011, in an 11-0 victory over Goldey-Beacom. The Wildcats also scored 10 goals against Felician on September 10, 2017. The previous record for assists in a game was 10, set three times, in the games against Goldey-Beacom and Felician previously mentioned, but also on October 19, 2019 against Chestnut Hill.

With the win, and a Georgian Court loss on Saturday, the Wildcats move back into first place in the CACC with 24 points. They have one game remaining and will host Chestnut Hill on Tuesday at the WU Athletics Complex. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
