WILMINGTON, Del. – On a night in which it was tough to grab and keep a hold of the ball, the Wilmington University women's basketball team had an even tougher time finding the bottom of the net while falling to Goldey-Beacom, 66-37, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the Joseph West Jones Center on Tuesday night.
Wilmington (1-12, 0-8 CACC) shot 13-for-53 for the game, finishing with a 24.5 field goal percentage from the floor. The Wildcats hit only 1-of 13 shots from beyond the three-point arc as well, dropping their 11th consecutive contest. Goldey-Beacom (11-6, 6-4 CACC) stayed in the hunt for the CACC playoffs with the victory.
The Wildcats were able to pick the pockets of the Lightning multiple times on the night, finishing with 11 steals, and forcing GBC into 30 turnovers. But, the visitors were unable to counter very often as they gave up the ball 29 times for the contest.
Trailing 25-11 in the first half, the Wildcats went on a 7-2 run to cut the gap to nine points with 3:30 on the clock before the half. But the Lightning retaliated with a 13-3 run of their own to head into the locker room with a commanding lead.
After the break, Goldey-Beacom opened the second frame with another 9-2 run to open the lead to 26 with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. The Wildcats would not get any closer the rest of the game.
Courtney Coleman paced the Wildcat offense with 11 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the floor and 1-for-3 from three-point territory. Kimberly Walton and Megan Fox chipped in six points each, while Coleman and Candace Phrance had a team-high five rebounds.
Goldey-Beacom's Devonne Richardson led all scorers with 15 points, as she collected a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. She also dished out a game best six assists on the night. Irene Hudson scored 10 points off the bench for the Lightning, closing out the only double-digit scorers for the game.
The Wildcats shot 1-for-13 from beyond the arc, but shot 10-for-15 from the free throw line. GBC shot 4-for-10 from three-point land and hit 6-of-7 from the foul line.
Wilmington has a full slate of games this week, as they will be back on the hardwood on Thursday as the Wildcats welcome Georgian Court to the Pratt Center for a 6 p.m. tip.
