Baseball Completes Season Sweep of Alliance With 11-7 and 9-0 Victories

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University baseball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Alliance, 11-7 and 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George.

The sweep gives the Wildcats the CACC South Division season series sweep over Alliance, hanging on to first place in the South Division with a 14-4 conference record. The Wildcats are now 22-16 overall. Goldey-Beacom is a game back in the loss column to the Wildcats, sitting at 12-5 in the CACC South.

GAME 1:

The Wildcats raced out to leads of 6-0 and 10-1 before needing to hang on down the stretch against Alliance. Alliance scored seven runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, cutting the deficit to as few as 10-7.

Erik Grady started the scoring by being walked to start the game, stealing third, and coming home on a Jack McDonald sacrifice fly. Zach Czarnecki scored on a wild pitch in the second to make it a 2-0 game and then an RBI groundout from Nick Nocella and another passed ball gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead after three innings.

Nic Hertzfeld singled and stole second and then came home on an RBI single by Erik Grady. Now with the bases loaded, Trevor Adamo hit a two-out, three-run double to left and the Wildcats led 10-1.

A four-run bottom of the seventh brought Alliance to within 10-7, before Justin Barcoski got back-to-back ground outs to end the inning. Barcoski stayed on and pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth and then Dom Grady added an insurance run at the plate with an RBI ground out before going 1-2-3 on the mound to close out the game.

Trevor Adamo went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, and three RBI. Shawn Haut went 3-for-3 while Zach Czarnecki collected two hits as well. Matt Boyko improved to 6-0 on the year with 6.0 innings pitched and eight strikeouts.

GAME 2:

A seven-run fourth inning pushed the Wildcats to the finish line of the season sweep over Alliance, as the combination of Tyler Reinert, Zach Czarnecki, and Tyler Brown threw a two-hit shutout.

The offense had one base runner one time through the lineup but then broke loose in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Shawn Haut started the scoring with an infield single. JJ Killen then cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field. Killen scored on an error and then Nick Classie and Erik Grady added RBI singles and the Wildcats led 7-0.

CJ Deery hit a two-out double in the fifth to tack on a run before Trevor Adamo hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to cap the scoring, 9-0.

Tyler Reinert improved to 2-1 on the year after pitching 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. He only allowed a walk and two hits. Zach Czarnecki pitched a perfect sixth before Tyler Brown pitched a perfect seventh.

Shawn Haut went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, finishing 5-for-7 in the doubleheader.

The Wildcats turn right around and face Felician on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. A Senior Day celebration will follow the cross-divisional doubleheader with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
