New Castle, Del. (4/30/22) The Dominican College baseball team were swept by the Wildcats of Wilmington University in a conference doubleheader played at Wilson Field.
The Chargers fall to 14-31 (11-12 CACC) on the season.
Game One: The Wildcats outlasted the Chargers in game one with an 11-8 victory.
Jack McDonald led the way for the Wildcats finishing 2-3 with a double and a team-high four RBIs. John Mead added a double, triple, and two runs scored. Quintin Ivy added two hits and drove in one RBI while Shawn Haut also added two hits and scored two runs.
Shane Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished the game going 2-3 for Dominican including a double and drove in two RBIs. Bryant Bassett (Bronx, N.Y.) added a two-RBI single while Benjamin Avila (Walden, N.Y.) finished going 2-4 with one RBI.
Bobby Garbuio (Chappaqua, N.Y.) added an RBI while Alexander Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) and Max Chidsey (Naples, Fla.) also drove in one RBI each.
The Chargers got off to a fast start by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The DC rally was highlighted by an RBI-single by Avila, a sac fly by Garbuio, and capped off by a two-run double from Hewlette.
The Wildcats used a five-run second inning to take the lead over DC. The Chargers answered right back with another four-run inning to regain the lead. A sac fly by Reyes tied the game and then singles by Chidsey and Bassett gave the Chargers an 8-5 lead.
The Wildcats scored six unanswered runs over the next three innings which gave them an 11-8 edge and finished off the win.
Game Two: Wilmington completed the sweep over DC with a 12-2 victory in game two.
The Chargers jumped ahead in the second inning with two runs after Tyler Patterson (East Meadow, N.Y.) drove in the first run of the game with a sac fly and Reyes reached on an error which scored DC's second run.
The Wildcats scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning and then took the lead in the third inning. The Wildcats scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend to a 12-2 lead and the score would remain for the rest of the game.
Tyler Richman (Sunrise, Fla.), Jason Sosa-Rivas (Yonkers, N.Y.), Garbuio, Ethan Sarmiento (Warwick, N.Y.), and Christian Fils-Aime (North Babylon, N.Y.) each had one hit in the loss.
For the Wildcats, Scott Borgmann who had two doubles and one RBI while Nick Nocella added two hits including a double and two RBIs.
John Mead also added two hits and two RBIs. Jack McDonald, Quintin Ivy, and Erik Grady each added one RBI.
The Chargers will finish their conference portion of their 2022 schedule tomorrow when they visit Felician University. Game one is scheduled for 11:00 AM and game two at 2:00 PM.
