NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Senior Meghan Logullo capped a late game rally in the nightcap for the Wilmington University softball team, hitting a walk-off single in game two against the University of the Sciences to pick up the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep, 8-4 and 2-1, on Monday at Asbury Field.
Logullo's two out single capped the Wildcats' (19-17, 11-5 CACC) comeback in game two, as they scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs before finishing the comeback in the eighth. The Devils (6-22, 5-13 CACC) scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning but couldn't find the final out in the seventh inning.
With one out in the ninth, Colby Wyatt singled through the left side to put a runner on base. USciences were able to get the second out at second base on a bunt by Chelsea Botsch, but Botsch used her speed well on the base paths. Cambria Ziemba singled to put Botsch on second base, before Botsch executed a delayed steal of third base.
Trying to recover, the Devils' Katie Dickson threw down to third base, but the ball skipped of Kelsey Doherty's helmet as she was standing in the batters box and into left field. Botsch came home with the tying run to force extra innings.
With two outs and the bases empty, Ashley Bennett started an eighth inning rally with a double down the right field line, just out of the reach of a diving Kiersten Badzgon near the foul line. Logullo then stepped in and sent a 1-1 pitch over the head of the second baseman, allowing pinch runner Katrina Swank to score easily from second base.
In the opener, the Wildcats spotted the Devils two runs in the top of the third before getting on the board in the home half of the inning. Botsch was at it again on the base paths as she stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catch for the Wildcats' first run.
The offense poured it on in the next two innings, taking the lead on a two-run homer to dead center by Bennett, putting the Wildcats in front, 3-2.
The Devils came back to tie the game with a single run in the top of the fifth inning, but the home team responded with a five run home half to grab control of the opening game for good.
Kelsey Doherty started the scoring with an RBI triple before Shannon McMahon brought her home with an RBI single to right center. Now with two outs, Logullo doubled in two more runs, hitting the gap in left center. Miranda Pedersen followed with a double down the right field line, bringing the fifth run to the plate for the Wildcats.
Wyatt then came on for the Wildcats and tossed the final two innings to start the doubleheader with a victory. Brooke Lachette tossed the fourth and fifth inning for the Wildcats, picking up the win and improving to 2-2 on the year.
Botsch and Bennett led the Wildcats with three hits a piece on the day, as Botsch went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener and Bennett batted 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
Stephanie Sarris went all eight innings in game two, striking out four batters while only allowing one run on six hits and three walks. The senior is now 9-6 on the season.
The Wildcats head to Chestnut Hill on Thursday to wrap up play on the week before taking Easter Weekend off. Thursday's doubleheader in Philadelphia is scheduled for a 2:30 first pitch.
