Susanne Vistnes’ Hat Trick Leads LIU Post Past Wilmington Women’s Soccer

NEWARK, Del. - - A hat trick by LIU Post's Susanne Vistnes led the Pioneers past the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 5-0, in nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

With the nonconference loss, the Wildcats (5-8-1 overall) are now winless in their last 12 matches outside the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, including the NCAA East Region appearance in 2012. They last defeated a nonconference opponent on October 18, 2011 when they beat Millersville, 2-1, at the Kirkwood Soccer Club. They are 0-10-1 overall since.

The Pioneers (11-3 overall) have come on strong lately, scoring 11 goals in their past two matches, also defeating Saint Thomas Aquinas, 5-0, on Saturday.

Vistnes started the scoring for the Pioneers in the 7th minutes, redirecting a ball by Katie LaManna with her head which went up and over Wildcats' goalkeeper Julia Brown. LIU Post's Hanna Westerling made it 2-0 in the first half with an unassisted goal in the 40th minute.

The second half was more of the same for the Pioneers as Vistnes scored goals in the 51st and 66th minutes off crosses form the right side. The three goals gave Vistnes 11 on the season for the Pioneers. Westerling capped the scoring for the visitors with her seventh goal of the season in the 76th minute.

Brown recorded 15 saves for the Wildcats, a few of which came on back-to-back shot attempts at point blank range. Brown even went full horizontal on a shot early in the first half to get a fingertip on a ball to keep it out. They 15 saves in a game were five off the all-time most in a single contest, set by Catie Joynes on September 4, 2005 against Stonehill.

Wilmington remains away from the CACC for another match this week, as the Wildcats round out their nonconference schedule with a trip to Dowling on Thursday. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
