Wilmington Women’s Soccer Drops Final Nonconference Match, 5-0, against Bridgeport

Playing in wet and sloppy conditions, the Wilmington University women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision against Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex in the team's final nonconference match of the season.

Ranked sixth in the latest NSCAA Division II East Region Poll, Bridgeport (9-3-1 overall) took it to the Wildcats (3-11 overall) early, outshooting the Wildcats 19-0 in the first half and 28-3 for the match.

The Purple Knights got on the board in the 11th minute off a corner kick as Amanda Moura redirected a low ball to the near post past Wilmington goalkeeper Julia Brown 10:31 into the match.

The Purple Knights added another goal in the first half off a corner kick, as the ball popped loose from in front of the goal right to Ariana Weingrad who shot the ball just under the cross bar from 22 yards out. Bridgeport led, 2-0, in the 36th minute.

Right before the halftime break, Bridgeport added a third goal, as Weingrad put her second in the back of the net after a scramble in the box. Weingrad had a loose ball pop right to her again, but this time inside the 18-yard box and she put it home for the 3-0 lead with 43 seconds to play in the half.

Following the halftime break, the Purple Knights added on quickly as Moura scored her second goal of the match off an assist from Sophie Sorkvist just 1:47 into the second half.

Julia Weidenmark capped the scoring for the visitors in the second half in the 70th minute, again scoring on a corner for Bridgeport. Tabe Rauschenberger played a short corner to Ellen Karlsson whose cross found Weidenmark's head for the header goal.

The Wildcats best chance to get on the board came as Loran Wyrough found herself in on the keeper following a ball over the top down the middle. But Purple Knight starter Kaitlin Occhipinti deflected the ball out of bounds on Wyrough's shot to preserve the shutout.

Brown recorded 13 saves in 61:21 of play for the Wildcats before reserve Kierstyn Williams came on and made five saves in 28:39 to close out the contest. Occhipinti recorded one save for the victory before Ava Gambardella came on for the final 28:09, making one save to secure the shutout for the Purple Knights.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday when they host Nyack in part of a soccer doubleheader at the WU Athletics Complex. The team will celebrate its seven seniors prior to the start of the match for Senior Day, with the start slated for 12 p.m.
