SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - - On a chilly, breezy day, the Wilmington University baseball team used its small-ball approach and a two-out rally to pull one out at Shippensburg, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Fairchild Field.

Wilmington (25-14) bounced back from being two-hit yesterday against West Chester and collected 10 hits against fellow PSAC foe Shippensburg (23-17), non-bigger than a two-out double and an ensuing single to take the lead in the ninth inning.

The game started out fast, as the teams scored three of the games' seven runs in the first two innings, but neither team could scratch more than one run across in any inning on Wednesday.

BJ Janney started the game with a double down the right field line on a full count, beginning his stellar day at the plate for the Wildcats. After moving over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Harbach, Jordan Oncay hit a deep fly ball to right field, allowing Janney to score the games' first run.

Shippensburg came back to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead with a single run in the bottom of the second. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the home team for the next four innings.

In the top of the sixth, Harbach started the inning with a double down the right field line of his own, setting up the tying run. Godwin laid down a bunt to advance him to third base, but got a bunt single instead, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Oncay again lofted a ball to left field, deep enough to score Harbach from third for the 2-2 score.

Another sacrifice fly led to the Wildcats second lead of the game, as they put another single run across in the top of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Jonathan Rodriguez and Brendan Fallers recorded back-to-back bunt singles and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Now with the bases loaded, Harbach flied out to center field, recording another sacrifice fly as Rodriguez scored for the 3-2 lead.

The Raiders picked up the game tying run off reliever Nick Marics in the bottom half of the inning, as a two-out single to left center by Eric Herman allowed Tyler Basso to score from first, tying the game again at 3-3.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Wildcats got the ball rolling again in the top of the ninth. The inning started off on the right foot and looked as though they would score more than one run in the inning. Brandon Payne started the inning with a single into center field. As Rodriguez was attempting to move him to second via a bunt, Raider reliever Kody Kibler wheeled and fired the bunt to second to start the 1-6-4 double play.

Now with two on and no outs, Brendan Faller rejuvenated the inning with a double down the left field line to put the go-ahead run on second. Janney collected his third hit of the game, none bigger than his single through the right side, allowing Fallers to score for the 4-3 lead.

Oncay, who came on to start the top of the eighth inning, got the first two batters out in the bottom of the ninth on ground outs to first base, but ran into trouble late. Basso singled back up the middle and a mishap by Harbach in center allowed Basso to advance to third base. Oncay settled in and picked his fourth win of the season as he induced a pinch hitter to ground out to third to end the game.

Janney batted 3-for-4 with the game-winning RBI and scored the game's first run on the day. Brendan Fallers was the only other Wildcat with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Harbach, Mike Godwin, Frank Samluk, Payne and Rodriguez each added one hit to round out the 10 Wildcat knocks on the day.

Samluk started the day on the mound for Wilmington, throwing the first four innings of the game before turning it over to the bullpen. Samluk struck out one batter while allowing two runs on four hits in the no decision. Jamie Treml struck out the side while allowing a hit and a walk in the fifth before Tyler Fries fired a scoreless sixth. Marics gave up a run in the seventh before Oncay pitched the final two scoreless innings for the win.

Wilmington it off this weekend and have a chance to catch their breath following a stretch of six games in four days. The team went 5-1 during that stretch and will return to action on Tuesday, April 24 against another PSAC opponent when it travels to Millersville.
