The Chargers comeback fell short with the Mavericks securing the win in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 3-15 overall on the season.
Richard Paulino (San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic) led the way with three hits. Ethan Sarmiento (Warwick, N.Y.) finished with two hits. Bobby Garbuio (Chappaqua, N.Y.) added a double and scored one run. Shane Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) added one hit and two RBIs.
Justin Diaz (Coral Springs, Fla.) started for the Chargers and recorded five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
For the Mavericks, Nolan Giblin recorded three hits and drove in two RBIs. Ryan Gonzalez finished with one hit and one RBI. Nikko Liguori finished with two hits including a double and scored two runs.
Mercy got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Giblin drove in his first RBI of the game.
The Chargers tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Garbuio doubled then later scored on a passed ball.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning and then extended their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Chargers rallied to load the bases. Shane Hewlette singled which drove in three runs to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Liguori singled and advanced to third base and Nolan Giblin drove in the game winning run.
The Chargers will look to bounce back when they open conference play on Thursday, March 24th against the Cougars of Caldwell University. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM.
