Long Ball Lifts Wilmington Softball to Regular Season Finale Sweep at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - - A couple of comebacks closed out the 2023 regular season for the Wilmington University softball team, as it went on the road and beat Kutztown, 6-3 and 7-3, on Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field.

A four-run top of the sixth pushed the Wildcats (34-12) past the Golden Bears (25-21) in the opener, and then then scored five straight after trailing 2-0, in the nightcap on Wednesday. The Wildcats hit four homers in the doubleheader sweep.

GAME 1:

Kutztown came out and put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats scored single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings but trailed 3-2 after five innings. The Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the sixth, turning the game around.

Gabriella Saucedo put the Wildcats on the board with a solo homer to lead off the fourth. Taylor Gillis then hit a two-out single back up the middle in the fifth, plating Tristyn Stewart to make it a 3-2 ball game.

Now facing a new pitcher, the Wildcats loaded the bases without recording an out. Delani Sheehan than stepped in and hit a double to right center, scoring two for the 4-3 lead. Emma Zimmerman added to the lead with an RBI single and then Cassidy Zelano beat out a double-play ball to score another run, giving the Wildcats the 6-3 lead.

Delani Sheehan came on to pitch in the bottom of the fifth, leaving a leadoff double on base in the sixth and then going 1-2-3 in the seventh to close out the victory and improve to 12-6 on the year.

GAME 2:

Kutztown scored single runs in its first two at-bats, but then the offense came around in the third and fourth innings.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Sara Miller sent a 2-1 pitch deep to left for her eighth homer of the season, giving the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth, Cassidy Zelano reached on an error to keep the inning alive and then Taylor Gillis took the first pitch she saw over the fence in right center, nearly taking out the live stream camera to give the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.

Gillis wasn't done for the game, again taking the first pitch she saw in the top of the seventh for a pair of insurance runs, hitting her third homer of the year for the 7-3 lead.

Kylee Gunkel allowed single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, but never allowed the Golden Bears to collect multiple runs in an inning. She improved to 16-4 on the year, striking out six batters while allowing three runs on nine hits.

Taylor Gillis went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored in game two.

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats learned their opponent for the First Round of the CACC Tournament on Wednesday as well, as Goldey-Beacom swept Dominican to end the regular season to earn the No. 8 seed. The Lightning will now make the trip to Asbury Field on Saturday to take on the top seeded Wildcats. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
