Holy Family's Carly Covington Named 2019 CACC Women's Volleyball Player of the Year; All-League Teams Announced
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November 19, 2019) -- Holy Family University standout Carly Covington on Tuesday was named the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Volleyball Player of the Year, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Covington also made First-Team All-CACC honors as an outside hitter, as the voting for the league's all-conference and major awards was conducted by the league's 14 head coaches in the sport.
In addition to Covington, several other standouts earned major awards including University of the Sciences' Tori Wright (CACC Rookie of the Year), Felician University's Sierra Gallagher (CACC Defensive Player of the Year) and Holy Family's Morgan Silks (CACC Setter of the Year). Felician's John Chang was named the CACC Coach of the Year, while Nyack College earned the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating outstanding character and commitment throughout the season.
Covington became HFU's second-straight student-athlete to earn the CACC Player-of-the-Year award, as she joined former standout Chase Wassel, who earned the honor during the 2018 campaign. She leads the CACC in total kills (435), while also pacing the conference in total points (490.5). She also ranks second in the CACC in kills per set at 3.88. Covington posted double-digit kills in all but one match this season including producing 20-or-more kills five times. Her season-best total was 24 in a win at USciences on Oct. 22. Covington helped lead the Tigers to a 16-3 mark in league play in 2019, as Holy Family captured the CACC South Division Regular Season Championship.
Wright had a sensational debut season at the collegiate level, as she ranks among the top six in total kills (6th, 329) and kills per set (5th, 3.32). She ranks second in the CACC with 57 service aces. She earned second-team all-conference accolades at the outside hitter position.
Gallagher was named the league's top defensive player, while also collecting First-Team All-CACC status at libero. She paces the conference with 5.73 digs/set, and her 602 total digs is the second-highest mark in the CACC. She helped guide Felician to the CACC North Division Regular Season Championship.
Silks was named the setter of the year after posting a league-best mark of 10.69 assists/set, and ranking second with 1,197 total assists. She garnered first-team all-league status at the setter spot as well.
Chang was tabbed as the CACC Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Falcons to a 12-7 league record and locking up the conference's North Division Championship.
