USP UPSETS HOLY FAMILY IN CACC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Mar 4, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia held Holy Family to 30.6-percent (22-72) shooting from the field in a 66-57 victory today in the 2005-06 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Tournament Championship game. USP and Holy Family have now met in the title game for three consecutive years, with the Devils coming out on top in 2003-04 and the Tigers winning last season.

USP, the second seed in the tournament, jumped on the Tigers from the start as junior guard Shelby Rance scored back-to-back buckets on the way to a quick 5-0 lead. The advantage grew to as many as 16 (34-18) in the first half and USP (23-7) went into the break up by seven, 38-31. Though Holy Family (28-2) was able to cut the lead to two, 49-47, with 7:22 on the clock, the Devils held them off and the Tigers did not hold a lead in a game for the first time this season. The loss also ended Holy Family's 28-game win streak.

Rance, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after the game, led the Devils with 17 points. Junior guard Rashanna Edwards added 11 points and five assists, while senior forward Leah Shumoski also contributed 11 points. Freshman center Allison Weiss came up with a huge game for the Devils, as she registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Melissa Brooks led the Tigers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while junior center Megan Bauer tallied 13 points and six rebounds.

By virtue of winning the tournament, the Devils have received the conference's automatic bid to the Division II NCAA Tournament. The field for the event will be announced Sunday evening.
