DOMINICAN CAPTURES 2010 CACC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN SEVENTH-INNING RALLY
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Dominican College softball team rallied to win the 2010 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship by defeating Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon. Georgian Court won the first game of the day, 11-10, while the Lady Chargers rallied from a 6-2 deficit to win the finale, 7-6, to claim the title.
Game one saw GCU jump out to a 5-0 lead before the Lady Chargers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by catcher Nicole Scarillo to make the score 5-1 after three innings.
The Lions extended their lead to 8-1 in the fourth, but DC rallied with a five-run bottom stanza to pull within two runs, 8-6. Senior Lauren Galladay got the scoring going with an RBI single to centerfield and freshman Julie Plante followed with a sacrifice fly ball to score a run. Delaney Childers hit an RBI triple and a GCU error on a ball hit by senior Cara Piasecki platted another run. Scarillo picked up her second RBI of the game with double to right field to end the scoring for DC in the inning.
Georgian Court added two runs in the sixth to go up 10-6, but DC rallied once again with a four-run bottom half of the inning on RBI singles by Scarillo and Ashley Corrao and a two-run single to center by Deidre Jeppson to tie the contest at 10-10.
A game-winning double by GCU in the top of the seventh lifted them to an 11-10 victory, forcing a second game.
Sophomore Katrina Pistilli allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits in six innings, while Childers suffered the loss (22-8) in the seventh.
In the finale, Georgian Court took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Lady Chargers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead as Plante and Childers each delivered RBI singles with two outs.
The Lions tied the game in the third and regained the lead at 5-2 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and added a run in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Dominican got a run back in their half of the fifth inning as Piasecki blasted a one out solo home run to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
The Lady Chargers tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles with two outs by Plante and Childers. Plante's double to left center scored a run and two runs came home on the Childers hit.
In the bottom of the seventh, catcher Corrao led off the inning with an infield single and Ashley Martinez followed by reaching on a Lion fielding error to put two on with no one out. Jeppson reached on a fielder's choice which saw Corrao out at third base and senior first basemen Danielle Garrison delivered the game-winning single to left field to score Martinez and lift Dominican to the 7-6 victory.
Childers allowed six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings in the no decision. Pistilli got the win to improve to 15-6 on the year in 2 2/3 innings of relief without allowing a hit.
The Lady Chargers now stand at 37-14 overall and have earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
Georgian Court opened the final day of the tournament with a 7-6
victory over the Caldwell College Cougars. The loss was the
Cougars’ second of the double elimination tournament and they
returned home 42-14.
