EASTON, MA – The Bloomfield College volleyball team got their 2017 campaign off to a roaring start with a 3-0 sweep over Dominican College as both Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schools traveled to Stonehill College to battle in the Skyhawks Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Bears (1-0) under first year head coach, James Pompeo took 25-15, 25-11 and 25-15 set victories over the Chargers (0-2) during the non-conference matchup on neutral territory.

Bloomfield returned only one player from last year's senior laced team but the batch of new faces stepped up led by junior transfer, Jandra Fabian (Santa Dominigo, DR) and freshman Ashley Stroot (Rolesville, NC) who combined for 29 digs, 23 kills and 4 service aces. Freshman Junelly Marrero (Cantano, PR) paced the Bears offence with 24 assists while junior Linda Thomas chipped in 14 digs on the defensive side.
 
It did not take long for Bloomfield to take control early, after a see-saw battle to 14-14 in the first set, the Bears clawed out an 11-1 rally for the 1-0 lead. In Set 2, Bloomfield used a 12-2 stretch to assume command and put the Chargers in a 2-0 hole. Dominican still had some fight left in them and charged ahead, 9-4 to begin Set 3 however the Bears were locked in and came back to tie the score at 11-11. Stroot finished the afternoon with a .500 hitting percentage as Bloomfield secured the last set comfortably, 25-15.
On day two of the invitational Bloomfield faces Shepherd University at 12:30 p.m. and the hosts, Stonehill College at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3.
