BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The women's basketball team defense held the visiting Devils of USciences to a season-low twenty-nine points in Saturday afternoon's 52-29 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory at the Bloomfield College gym.
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) each scored in double-figures as the Bears remain unbeaten at 8-0 in league action and 12-4 overall. The loss dropped USciences to 3-12 on the season and 3-5 in CACC match ups.
The game started off slow for both teams offensively as a Micah Jordan buried a jumper at the 7:22 minute mark to put the Devils up 4-2 but sparked a scoreless drought that lasted over four minutes for the CACC teams. Wilson knocked down a deep ball to give the Bears their first lead at 7-6 with 2:16 remaining in the opening period but the teams would go cold once again and the first quarter drew to a close without another basket.
Jahniece Jaffe (Egg Harbor, N.J.) tossed in a three-pointer to start the next period and jumpstart the Bears offense. Smith netted a three-ball on the home team's next possession and the CACC North Division unbeaten leader would not look back again. Bloomfield College held USciences to a season-low three points in the second quarter to pull away for a 21-9 advantage at halftime. The Devils turned the ball over eleven times during the first two quarters and only hit four shots the entire half.
In the third quarter, a Jaffe shot from beyond the arc gave Bloomfield a 22-point edge (39-17) as the Devils searched for offense. The fourth quarter played out the same as a
Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) three-pointer extended the margin to 25 (52-27) in the waning moments of the game.
Wilson led all scorers with 17 points (6-12 FG, 5-9 3FG) and picked up two steals, an assist and a rebound for the afternoon while Smith added 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jaffe provided a spark off the bench and scored eight points and junior guard, Taylor added 7 points and four dishes in a reserve roll for the afternoon.
Jordan and Amber Reiley scored six points, five rebounds and an assist apiece with Morgan recording a steal as well for the Devils.
Bloomfield returns to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to take on the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College on Jan 12. The Bears will put their undefeated CACC record on the line for the 6:00 pm matchup.
